Well it finally happened...

Working a 8th grade tournament this weekend.... not bad pitching... just a sh!t load of bad catchers. And after being hit like 15 times with 2 of those times dead in the cup...Ball is coming in on the ground toward the slot. So, I move!! (its a bad bad habit and hard to break on the fly, no pun) and the ball jumped up and hit me square in the front side of the neck. I guess I made it a few feet before going out.
Still remember my vision closing and then not being able to stand on my own. felt fine after a few minutes and i did finish the game.... weird, I have been knocked down a few times (during my younger years... big mouth and booze) :) but i never lost it like that.

Sorry to here that, but that's what you get for moving. :)

Good thing is that a ball at that height would have bounced harmlessly off the bottom of most umpires' check protector. Although some taller ones may have caught it in the cup. :D

azbigdawg Mon Mar 02, 2009 12:30pm

I hope like HELL that it "just happened to miss" the THROAT PROTECTOR that you were wearing?

If not, GO BUY ONE!

CajunNewBlue Mon Mar 02, 2009 02:10pm

throat protector is built into the mask. but turning my head didn't help.

The built-in wire throat protectors are woefully inadequate, IMO.

shipwreck Mon Mar 02, 2009 02:32pm

I absolutely won't use a mask without an added on extended throat protector. Without it there is way too big of a gap there. Dave

Weird. I was advised by one of our UICs not to use one, that dangling throat protectors are "too baseball".

That wouldn't be wade, would it? ;)

I'd discount the advice of anyone who told me to not wear some protective equipment due to some kind of softball-baseball image issue.

Stu Clary Mon Mar 02, 2009 03:50pm

Hahahaha! No, I've never met Wade.

Really...what mask are you using? and how did that "built in" protector work out for you?

The mask wasnt at fault.... it did what it was designed to do "protect the front of my face and throat"
Turning my head 45 degrees to the left while running away from the pitch like a scared little girl is what got me knocked the he11 out.
I'm comfortable with saying that as its an error I will not soon repeat. or at least i wont admit to it on here. :)

btw you guys that wear danglers... go call a baseball game... i will call two softball games (if i dont get knocked out :) ) and visit you at the 7th inning. ;)

SRW Mon Mar 02, 2009 04:03pm

About 4 years ago, a drop ball that F2 missed bounced back up from the plate into my throat. No, I wasn't wearing a "dangler".

I do now tho.

I don't call baseball, but I have taken several bouncers off the "dangler" and have been very thankful it was there.

Same for me, didn't wear the dangler until I got hit in the throat.

The funny(?) part is that the guy who was on the bases was our local equipment distributor...caring and kind guy that he was, he immediately ran down to the plate area and asked me if......I wanted to buy a throat protector!

Needless to say, I bought one right after the game. My very next plate game, a pitch that bounced in front of the catcher came up and got me right in the dangling throat protector....instant confirmation that my purchase was worth it.

I wear a dangling throat protector and I have no doubt it has saved me a few times. I'm not in his area but the only thing I've ever heard about a throat protector is to black out the white lettering. I'm always suprised at UICs who say stupid stuff like "it's too baseball"... although I personally have never heard that.

I have heard that said to me when I decide to wear my West Vest but its just a comment, I dont take it seriously. If they are bringing it, I put on the WV.

shipwreck Tue Mar 03, 2009 07:00am

Or......., we'll call our 3 softball games and then come visit you at your local hospital. Dave

CajunNewBlue Tue Mar 03, 2009 11:40am

Well apparently some people took exception to my "danglers" comment... its just my "sense" of humor.
Wear whatever protective equipment you feel you need, hustle and be safe.

Except, don't ever wear that mask hanger clip thingey on your belt... or i will make fun of you behind your back. :) :p

Does that mean it is okay for a coach or player to ask a PU, "Hey, Blue, how's it dangling?"

I will not only make fun of you behind your back, I'll probably do it in front of you, too. With other people watching.
