Reproduction without permission

ok, for all you smart folks out there.... When we type rule references or case plays verbatim from the books in here (or anywhere else for that matter.. ie: email or other (cough) forums) are we breaking any kind of copyrighting "laws"
Coz, I know i sure don't call nfhs or ncaa anytime i use their materials.

Second question... do they have a site that cross reference most of the main rulesets? I have only found the one on cactusumpires and the format is kinda gei.
Thanks.

I'm no lawyer, but Fair Use is a hot topic with me. Fortunately, I believe that legally-speaking, we're safe.

See this site with regards to Fair Use law. I believe that this forum qualifies, as we criticize, comment upon, and teach from the materials that we reference here.

love me some wikipedia!! :) so, let me ask y'all.... If I was to develop some kind of hyperlinked, cross referenced thingy using scanned and ocr'ed rulebooks and made it publicly available for critique'ing (sp) and commenting and use for teaching... I'd probably wouldn't need permission? (just spit balling here)

JMO, but if you're reproducing substantial amounts of the rulebooks, I think you'd be skating on thin ice.

Again, this is my opinion:

OKAY: Cite the "same" rule (including related definitions, etc.) from 5 rule books, making comparisons, criticisms, etc.

NOT OKAY: Take 5 complete rule books and put them on line, even if you add hyperlinks and commentary, without the permission of the publishers/authors of each of the 5 rulebooks.

At what point you cross the line between these two extremes is a matter of much discussion and may depend on what Federal Appellate District you're in.

Wasn't it you that advised an umpires association that it would be wise to take down the copy of the electronic ASA rulebook they had posted on their website?

Probably, but that referred to an entire publication and that wasn't the question at hand. Also, I was really more concerned about the umpire than I was the rule book.

Its a non issue.

Now if someone started giving away cd/files from CDs etc that are sold in obvious violation, I would dutifully warn them to be careful after obtaining my copy from them.

Hell, he's gonna have to move now. I don't believe they allow "thinking" in CA.
