We probably have gone over this before but I need a liitle more clarification for a discussion between myself and some other Blues

1. B/R during live ball touches white side only on a play at first and runs through the bag beating the throw. Dispute is if any infielder can gave a verbal only appeal on this call or is it like any live ball appeal and the runner would have to be tagged before they got back to 1st or the fielder would have to have possion of the ball while touching the base followed by a verbal appeal??

2. Same situation but PU calls "TIME" before the B/R has return to the bag and a verbal appeal is given. Do you not have to allow the runner to return to the base in a DEAD ball situation before hearing the appeal?? If so then this would always have to be a live ball appeal for the defense to be able to get an out. Right or Wrong?

Thanks

Don

Don.......

I would only accept a live ball appeal in this situation. ASA 8-2-M requires the defense to appeal before the BR returns to 1st.

If I were an umpire where the DB was used and time was requested before the BR returned to the base......I would not grant it.

Speaking ASA.

This must be a live ball appeal. Two things. First, there must have been a play on the BR. Second, the defense must tag the player or the base and indicate this action is an appeal prior to the player returning to the base.

See answer above. Once TIME is called, there is no possibility of a missed base appeal in this scenario unless there was some reason to award bases and the player failed to return and touch 1B.

hmmm

Maybe I'm wrong, but I though a batter/runner could touch either base. No?

NYPD

ASA a runner must make contact with the saftey side when a play is being made except for a couple exceptions that are covered in the rule book
