Unusual Experience..

Got conned into doing a T ball [softball] game last night when the regular
blue did not show. Quickly reviewed the "rules" [grin] that were being
applied. Things seemed to be going well. About the 3rd inning I did kill
the ball a little quick, got just a few moans from Mama's. Then it <font color = red> happened.</font>
Little gal hits the ball is running to 1b, when her artifical leg comes off,
bounces up and hits her in the face. When some of the shock was gone, I got
over to her and she is bleeding pretty good around the face area where the leg had
hit her. Her coach picks her up and carries her to dugout. All the parents
[most] are yelling, crying, screaming, etc. Not this kid, she is sitting in dugout,
blood on her face and asking her sister to put the leg
back on. Coach nor sister knows how, and Mother is at the other complex watching
her son play BB. This kid wants back into the game. I don't allow it, and time
runs out before her Mom can get over to handle the situation. Needless
to say I had talk with coach for not informing me of this unique situation. The
<b>young lady was fine</b>, just upset that she could not finish the game.....

Actually you kinda just police it....The regular person
that does this division was unavailable this nite and I
happen to be around, so sorta got conned into it.....No,
you really don't <b>umpire</b>....The Lady that usually
does this is not anyway an official umpire, but she is a
very dedicated individual. The kids really like her. I
just directed traffic here and there and kept the parents
inline..[grin]

OOOOHHHH - Any chance I can get you to keep some of the parents in line for some of my LL games?? Between softball majors and baseball minors (8-10 with an occasional 11y/o), I get some doozies. I had one budding Nolan Ryan on the mound the other day whose dad obviously had a better view from 100 feet away than I did standing behind the catcher ;-)

I have seen posts from people asking rules questions for T-ball. i thought you might have been involved with one of those leagues. Thanx for restoring my faith :p

Now, now Kono! We use official ASA umpires in many leagues here in Metro Atlanta for Tball. Yours truly had to umpire Tball in her rookie year. Gives you a lot of appreciation from 'where you came from' once you progess! It made me progess as fast as I could!!!

Sorry Elaine - I just don't see it. Unless like Glen, you were more traffic cop than anything - or unless your T-Ballers are far more advanced down in Georgia than up here in CT.

Having coached T-ball, I think that at NO time should scores or even outs be kept (yup - seen those questions too). Usually after 2 innings half the kids want to go home and play with their friends. This is also the half that don't know where 2nd or 3rd base is. A ball that is hit with any amount of power usually winds up beyond any fielder you have, with at least 6 kids chasing it and fighting over it in the outfield.

My personal opinion is that umps should stay away from any game lower than an advanced minor league. Not because the game (or kids) is not worthy of us, but because it should be purely instructional. Let the coaches (honestly) call the safes and outs, and teach the kids some fair play along the way. I know it can be done, I coached my son through T-Ball, A-ball (coach pitch), and AA-ball (machine pitch). Most coaches worked pretty well with each other - only one or two were somewhat aggressive.

If someone called me to "ump" a T-ball game on Saturday morning, I would be really tempted.
Do you suppose the players would like, or dislike, a uniformed ump showing up at their games from time to time?
Nope, I have never done that, but maybe I would.... Maybe I'd go early and chalk the lines....
It could be a good deal for the players. :cool:

Well, one little girl in Tball came up to me after a game and said, "the coach said that a impire would be here, but I didn't know a lady cop would come to my game!" A lady cop, now ain't that cute! She was all of 4 1/2 with blond curls and big blue eyes. And actually, you need an umpire for the parents, not the girls!
