Welcome!

That's an awfully general question, though.

In slow pitch, you can't leave the base until the pitch reaches the plate. Other than that, do you have a specific question? Do you know who's rule book your church league is using (ASA, USSSA, etc.)?

Baserunning rules? Sure! That's easy!

- You get 1+1 on an overthrow.
- If you run out of the baseline anytime you're out.
- Runner has the right of way, even if the baseman is trying to field the ball.
- You have to slide at home, even if there's no play.
- High-fiving the 3B coach on a HR is illegal and you're out.

Very soon, somebody will post to claim I'm ignorant or joking. You guess which.

PS: I really wish we had a "grinning" icon that didn't look like a 1940s Asian caricature (or an Abercrombie T-shirt). Feel free to flame me for hypersensitivity.

Slugger.......

Try here: http://www.playnsa.com/html/nsa_softball.html

Click on Umps Corner......then on Playing Rules.....

You need Adobe Acrobat to read them......I believe the Baserunning rules are in Rule 8 in NSA......(make sure you are looking at the slow-pitch rules).

Hope this helps.....

Joel

BTW.......Dakota......how did you do that?

slugger87 Thu May 09, 2002 02:24pm

thanks.

thanks guys i appreciate it! the thing is i've played baseball my hole life and never softball so i want to make sure i don't make any dumb mistakes. specificly, stealing sliding... i'll check out that web site blue. thanks again!

PEACE!

Dakota, you da man!

Joel . . . shh, don't tell him the REAL rules . . . then he'll tell everybody and it won't be a secret any more! Then players will show up and actually know the rules and . . .

wait . . .

that would be a GOOD thing, wouldn't it??

<Emily Litella voice> Never mind.

slugger87 Thu May 09, 2002 02:42pm

ok i'm stupid.

uh... i'm confused after reading different things. is it required to slide at home? i've read that several places however i did not see it in the rule book. sorry but i'm a idiot so i need clarifacation.

Gulf Coast Blue Thu May 09, 2002 02:53pm

No slugger......you do not have to slide at home.......

BUT.....you do have to avoid crashing into a fielder that has the ball waiting to make a play on you......

You can: Perform a legal slide, go around the fielder (and possibly be called out for running outside your baseline avoiding a tag), give up, jump over the fielder, or try and go back to the last base previously held.....

Print out the rules from the website.......it will make it easier to study them.....and you will have a hard copy you can take with you and review whenever you have a chance.

Good luck

Joel

And to Patrick.........sometimes it is GOOD for the players to know the rules..............grin

Just so we're clear (as a lawyer, I'm usually not):

ALL of the "rules" I listed in my post above are FALSE. Lies. Myths. Things many people believe but ain't true. "The-thing-that-is-not", as Swift wrote.

Another feeble attempt at humor dies on the vine.

Slugger, just assume the OPPOSITE of everything I said above and you'll be ahead of most players in your rules knowledge.

I commend you in your efforts to learn. One thing you should do; as Dakota pointed out, find out EXACTLY what set of rules your league uses and get their book.

I, for one, am quite impressed at Dakota's cyber crafting! Now...how long do we have to wait to learn the trick?
