When I was trained I was basically instructed not to worry about the small things (ie:drag foot slightly of ground, rear foot 1" behind rubber and so forth) unless coachs say something early on about it (1st or 2nd inning). Don't create a problem. Over the last four years have been calling ASA 12u-18u, Fed HS, JrCol, with lots of diffrent Blues from diffrent areas all seem to have same thoughts on this. What do the rest of you do?

This is a touchy subject with several of the guys in my area. Most will not call anything, which creates problems for those who do make the illegal pitch calls.

The small non-flagrant issues can be handled in a discreet conversation with the coach. If you don't call what you see - it will cause things to get progressively worse - for the pitcher and for ALL blues.

There are a couple of local HS coaches who scratch umpires because they will call the illegal pitch. Not that the pitcher is "innocent", just that if you want to work "his" games - don't call it! I personally don't care if I ever call one of "his" games again. Teach her to throw it within the rules and there won't be any problems.

Gary,

Good call, if IP occurrs, it should be called and for all
the reasons you stated. Not helping anyone by letting it
slide. And as you stated not always necessary to be really
vocal about the call, just have conversation with coach at
the right time...Welcome back Gary.

[can you start a sentence with AND, guess so I did.] :),
