It has to ba a battery pack and transmitter for the camera in her face mask. They just had a shot from it.

IRISHMAFIA Mon Aug 11, 2008 09:49pm

That is one of the ugliest damn "blue" uniforms I've ever seen a crossing guard....er, umpire wear.

BigUmpJohn Mon Aug 11, 2008 09:54pm

Oh I was thinking we had a police officer behind the plate. I didn't realize it was a crossing guard. And the moment I turn it on I see a blown call at first base.

IRISHMAFIA Mon Aug 11, 2008 09:57pm

Throw coming from 3B side of field and BU1 is making the call from foul territory?

IRISHMAFIA Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:10pm

Another call from foul territory. This time the ball coming from 2B

BigUmpJohn Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:13pm

Yeah I think it was a bunt up the line and he moved into foul ground. I think it was in the fourth. And my goodness those uniforms are horrible. I looks like rainbow colored trim with a blueish-green shirt. Or is that greenish-blue? And is it ISF between inning mechanics to have all four umpires in the infield on the foul lines?

IRISHMAFIA Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:20pm

Just had an out-safe-**** call at 2B. Ouch.

Don't mind the between innings positioning, I prefer it.

IRISHMAFIA Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:22pm

BU2 in the C with a runner in 2B. Get a much better view from the other side on a pick-off

BigUmpJohn Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:24pm

My video started buffering on a replay of a pitch. Wow, you would think with the second base umpire on the left field side of 2B (which I really don't prefer), you can see a runner on second leaving early. He kinda missed one.

BigUmpJohn Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:27pm

And like he knows what we're thinking, he's back on the other side with a runner on second. Come on blue, be consistent.

With a runner on 1st, I agree. With a runner on 2nd, not so much as I prefer the umpire to approach a possible play from that position from the open side. Just a preference and since ASA does not recognize 4-umpire mechanics, we cannot be wrong!

I've had enough for tonight.

wadeintothem Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:39pm

Not working for me, which sucks!

Darn, some perfectly crappy foreign umpires to make fun of and I dont even get to.

This blows.

They must be on a very strict time down there same happened an inning before where PU stepped out 3rd base side and pointed at either the Canadian catcher or Taiwan batter and said YOU CAN"T DO THAT. LETS GO.

Does anybody know why the Taiwan batter was called out in the bottom of the 1st when she tried to bunt with the R1 on 2nd?

Was watching the game on Canadian tv broadcast and had to turn off the volume, the announcer and commentator were awful. :(

The call was back foot (left foot) was on ground out of box (behind plate)when contact with ball was made.

Dakota Tue Aug 12, 2008 12:12pm

Did the batter step back out of the box after the pitcher started her windup?

If yes, fine - batter out.

If no, then the PU should not have allowed the pitch.

Behind the plate...not behind the box...when contact was made with ball....probably had to be after the pitcher started her wind up?

Good call. Just viewed it.

I just watched a little clip of the game. BU went out on a foul ball hit up and almost in the stands. The BU first signalled with their left arm that ball was foul, followed by a hammer. Why in the world would that ball need to be signalled foul? A hurricane couldn't have brought that ball back fair or close to fair. Dave

AtlUmpSteve Tue Aug 12, 2008 06:14pm

Your point is valid, but ...

Both ASA and (at least, in the past) ISF teach to make a "first touch" signal, to help your partners judge a possible appeal on a tag up. The fair or foul signal is immediate on touch; the hammer indicates the catch/out. If a foul ball is dropped, you then signal dead ball; if a fair ball is dropped, you either continue to pump fair, or safe signal for no catch.

Completely off the subject but has anyone seen the team handball. The inventor of this game has got to be the most ADD person ever. I LOVE THIS GAME.

Actually, in HS (late '60s), we played a similar game on a football field called Speedball.

The differences are:

Used either a volleyball or soccer ball

The person with the ball must either "air dribble" or dribble the ball on the ground when moving.

No real tackling, but there was plenty of contact.

You could score three ways:

Throw or kick the ball between the uprights below the crossbar - 1 pt.
Drop kick the ball through the uprights over the crossbar - 2 pt.
Throw the ball the ball between the uprights below the crossbar and is caught in the air by a teammate - 3 pt.

Fun game, especially for us nerds who would routinely beat the "athletes" in gym class.

On the internet broadcast it is refreshing to listen to the sounds of the game without having commentators. You can actually here the plate umpire, players and the crowd without listening to the gums flap in the booth. ESPN should try this. Plenty of camera angles with an excellent picture.
What a blast it must be to call at this level.
