Would you fix this mistake?
JO Tournament, 16U, ASA rules
R1 on 1B, 1-1 count on B2, PU calls IP, B2 swings and misses. PU re-sets count to 2 - 1. B2 hits next pitch into LF for single, R1 stops at 2B. Umpires confer; agree that no one advanced runner on IP; agree that R1 would have easily made 3B on single; agree to advance R1 to 3B. D-Coach objects, says that a pitch was made after the IP. Umpire invokes rule 10, ruling his authority to correct his error (failing to advance runner on IP). Do you agree with umpire? Or coach? WMB |
10-3-C states it can't be done after a pitch. The error also didn't place either team in jeopardy so I'm gonna have to agree with DC.

First by the OC for not realizing the runner should advance on the IP. Second by the umpires for not advancing the runner on the IP. Third by the umpires for trying to correct the mistake when they couldn't and shouldn't have. |

Oh wait, that's my job. :D |
Agree with coach. And rule 10.. Umpires big time disadvantaged the defense here. Pitching and defenses are entirely different with a runner on 2b as opposed to 1B.. for all you know they would have walked the batter.
OC shares the blame here.. so he gets the error. No fix. |
Some days you're the bug, some days you're the windshield. No Fix.

Big thanx, Wade

Just rereading my rulebook, still made me think that the umpire's blew the call. That the had to fix it, even when I've read the sec. 10-part... But your explanation that also the Off.Coach has his responsebility and that defence get a disadvantage by the umpires when they fix it opened my eyes! Thank you,Wade! Now I can see... |
I have no fix on this one. Pitch has been thrown.

Rule 8-5-G-4 and RS on Overthrows state clearly that if the umpire errs in making a base award, the error cannot be corrected after a pitch. While the statement is made pertaining to overthrows, lacking any other guidance, I would consider this a general principle on base award errors by the umpire.
No correction should have been made in the OP situation. Also, if the umpire used rule 10, presumably he was using 10-3-C, which only applies to calls reversed or late calls, not to any general error by the umpire. And, even with that, it is not possible to make the rectification after a pitch. The umpires, IMO, compounded their original error in not making the base award by misapplying 10-3-C and by "correcting" an error than could not be corrected. |
