ASA manual says for a 2 man crew that there are 4 times a base umpire will make a call at third base 1.On the batter-runner on a triple with no runners on base. 2. On trail runner into third. 3. On a lone runner on a fly ball advancement. 4. On any return throw from the plate or a cut-off player. The book also says with a runner on first only, the plate umpire will observe the play then fade toward third base to cover the advancing runner. With a runner on first and a base hit to the outfield, who should make the call at third if there is a play? Seems like the manual says PU. Dave

With a runner on first and the ball hit to the outfield, the PU has the call at third on the runner that started at first. The PU should pick up that runner at second base and watch for obstruction as she comes to third.
The BU has the Batter-Runner all the way to third if the lead runner tries to score. One thing that I always cover in pre-game is the times when the PU covers third, I ask if (s)he wants to move for any additional play at home, or if (s)he wants the BU to move to home. In any event, good communication between partners is vital in these situations. |

Andy just about covered it all.
As PU, I always let my partner know what I'm doing, such as: I've got third, Joe or I'm going home, Joe. My partner and I also try to signal the coverage whenever the situation on the bases changes.. SamC |

I had a play last night where my BU got hung up outside of 1St
in the middle of a three ring circus. Sharp hit liner over F3's head with F9 playing in some. BU knowing there will be an attempted throw, stays outside, {really had no choice because of quickness of play]. He is now hung up in the middle of F3..BR..and a coach that may have been to close. Upon seeing this I position myself behind pitcher's area and when ball sails behind the trio at 1B BR heads for 2B...I hollar to BU I have coverage...Throw goes over F6's head into centerfield, runner rounding and never slowing see coach at 3Rd waving her home. Partner is there...runner is DOA. Point being communications as stated by Andy and SamC. glen
