Weirdest Hop EVER

Little league game, awful field 3-4 inches of grass. I am on the bases. I have noticed a few rocks, but nothing more then a normal “b” field would have.

No one on, so I am behind first. Batter hits a ball down the first baseline. The ball is going to the left of the first base coach on the first 2-3 bounces. Then it straitens out on the 4th bounce. The 5th bounce it took a turn, must have hit a rock. It came over the corner of the base from foul territory to fair. I about put my arm out of socket pointing fair. The batter had not moved an inch and the first baseman made a diving stop. He had time to get up and walk to the base.

I have never had one bounce over the bag form foul to fair, the other way many times, roll from foul and hit the bag, yes. But never bounce over the bag like that.

So, what weird hops have you had???

R1 on 1st. Line drive through the pitcher's legs, hit the pitcher's plate in the air, bounced up to F6 crossing 2nd for the force on R1, followed by a throw to 1st for an easy double play.

But if you were in the A slot, why were you signaling fair? That's the PU's call.

Up to the bag it's PU's, not over is what I learned. I always cover that in pre-game too. Don't have a manual on me, but I will always take that call. Why give it to your part 60 feet away with a runner in the way, when you are 10-15 feet away and can get a good angle on it?

I don't know if LL mechanics would be any different, but since I DO have a manual on me, I can tell you that the ASA manual says:

The plate umpire calls ALL fly balls as well as rendering all decisions on Fair/Foul and Catch/No Catch, except when the base umpire(s) TURN THEIR BACK to the infield and goes out to the outfield to make the call. Once the base umpire turns their back to the infield, it is THEIR CALL, fair/foul or caught or not caught. The base umpire should NOT RETURN. If a base umpire does not turn to go to the outfield, they should NOT make a call. The plate umpire should not mirror the signal given by the base umpire on fair/foul or catch/no catch.

If you were to tell me in the pregame that you wanted to make that call, I would tell you that I would prefer to call it by the book. Why open up the potential for having two umpires making conflicting calls?

I agree, but the PU probably wouldn't have that call from behind the plate. :D

16U National, tie game, extra innings, home team at bat with runner at second. Left handed hitter up, hits a short sinking line drive to the right of the third baseman. Ball hits at least three feet foul but four feet short of bag. After hitting the ground the ball has so much spin it immediately jumps toward the third baseman and off her glove into left field.......game over.

That beer really tastes like soap down there in TX, doesn't it? Maybe they should wash those beer mugs better. ;)

I lived in TX for about 35 of my years and never saw any soap, so I don't know what you may be talking about.

Conflicting calls? Just look at you part and you should be fine.

Same game no foul lines, just grass. Fly ball down right field line I go out and line it up the best I can. First base is moved 2 feet right due to water. I think it lands foul, being no line not sure. I swing around and look at my part at home. He has it lined up, and I know he has it fair, no signal, we had not worked together much before I just knew he had it fair. I nod and he calls it fair and off we go. The whole thing took maybe one sec.

And thank you all, I know I miss type and can't spell, and I drink hard stuff.

The field was in that condition at the start of the game, right? If you knew you had no hope of calling fair/foul based on no line and 1B not being in the right place, why did you even go out and act like you were going to call it? You knew from the get-go you had no shot, didn't you?

Besides, you trying to line it up just got in your partner's way, didn't it?

I went out more for the catch. Tough room. I thought the same in getting in the way, trust me I still think it was 2-3 feet foul, the point was more on not having conflecting calls.

Field, well it was the last game of year for them, anymore need to be said?
