Double first call from foul territory on a runner

OK, fast pitch high school Softball NY ASA rules

No outs runner on first. Pop up to first baseman, caught in foul ground, beats the runner back to first, BUT uses the colored section, not the white, to make the play.
Partner, on the bases, calls her out. First base coach appeals that she can not use colored section. I uses the the rule that the first baseman can use the colored base when the play comes from foul territory.

Well I changed my mind after reading the rules, 8.2.M.4 which uses the words batter-runner not runner.

The question is in 8.2.M.7 that states both sections of first can be used in a tag up. Does this mean offensively and defensively or just offensively as I read it?

Let me know what you all think.

Thanks

The way it was explained to me was this...

When there's a play on the batter-runner, the batter-runner must use the colored portion of the base (with the exception that you mentioned of a throw from foul territory).

Once that play is over, the double base essentially becomes one base. The offense and the defense are then able to use either portion of the double base.

Sounds like you made the right call, but for the wrong reason (at the time that you explained it to the coach). ;)

My understanding is that after the initial play at first, the orange part ceases to exist and only the white part exists, i.e. it's a normal base. The rule may be different in Canada.

I think you're right - the rule is different for CSA.

In ASA, the orange base doesn't disappear once the initial force play on the BR is over.

Before ASA changed the rule a couple of years ago, the orange base was dirt in foul territory except when a batter-runner was first reaching 1B, and it only mattered then when there was a play on the BR.

At all other times, it was dirt.

ASA changed the rule so that at all other times it is one large base than can be used by either the offense or defense.

Canada may still have the rule in its original form.

Blame Canada... Blame Canada... With all their beady little eyes and flapping heads so full of lies...

Just kidding. Had a little South Park moment. Just poking good fun at our northern brethren. :)

Actually, the OP was from NY.

Hey, Canada, do you want NY? If you take it, you have to take the Clintons, too. Package deal. :D

And I'll gladly throw in a free California!

We'll take NY but you'll have to keep the Clintons. ''aye''
Unless the rule got change last year or this spring, ( I have been forced to take the last 18 months off due to battling cancer, I'm winning for now, i have not looked at a rule book since but just sent away for this years package)The orange part no longer exist after the initial pass by the batter runner, only the white is used and ruled accordingly.

Your rules, as for the ones I've read on this forum make life a lot more simple for both ump & runner, maybe we'll catch up soon.

DW

our version is a lot better: ie play from foul territory by catcher or F3 for example.

You took the words right out of my mouth!

As for adopting states: we'll take NY, as long as we can move the Yankees to Montreal. The Staten Island Yankees, that is. A major league team would be too much of a shock. You can keep California, but is Alaska up for grabs? It would raise our average annual temperature by a few degrees.

You just want the oil so you can sell it back to the idiots in this country at an inflated rate ;)

Who are the Clintons? Are they that poor barely fed mountaineer family that moved to Beverly Hills after finding some Texas Tea?
