INT vs no call
 

Today I have bases full, batter hits a line drive up middle very slightly to left field side of 2B. R2 takes lead on pitch, as ball is hit, F6 breaks to her left and after a step, has to hesitate for a split second because runner is between her and the ball. Runner also hesitates for a split second and goes to her right to avoid F6 allowing F6 to continue in a straight path toward the ball. There is no body contact.

Batted ball goes into center field about 2-3 strides beyond F6's reach.
In my judgement, F6 would not have had a play on the ball had R2 not caused the slight hesitiation of F6. However it would have beel closer, maybe 1-2 strides beyond her reach rather than 2-3.

D coach came out and wanted INT because F6 obviously had to hesitate for a split second.

How do you draw the line between INT and no call on this play?

It comes down to, IMO, did the runner interfere with the fielders ability to make a play.

Sounds to me like she possibly did, but you wrote you didn't think it did so I'm not second guessing (you saw it, I didn't). If she didn't have a chance to make a play then you could have obstruction, especially with NFHS rules.

Hard to know if she would have made a play, but the hesitation may have cost her a chance.

Was there a play that F6 had that she didnt have because of the runners action?

Yes = INT
No = Play on

Of course a coach is going to want this.. the same as they are going to not want you to call it if it was their defender.

I agree you have to make a judgement call, and that can't be protested! If you feel it interfered with the players chance to make a play on the ball, not with her being closer to making a play, but actually with her making a play on that ball....then you have INT, now as you stated in your opinion she would have been 1-2 strides from the ball had there been no R2....with this information you have nothing, again a split second decision based on a number of things that you had to be there to see (F6's abilities, her position at TOP, how quick she took off once hit, distance to ball, etc.) Could have gone either way based on the above I mentioned, but from your description (1-2 strides away) it sounds like you got it right to me!

And as Dholloway mentioned you do have a chance at OBS once that fielder is not protected due to fielding a batted ball, so be watching out for that too!!
