2 person mechanics fly ball to Right BR to 3rd
 

ok had a game the other night that made me think, not easy to do :p . Anyway 2 person mechanics nobody on, shot to deep right field (don't go out on) anyway ball is down I am taking BR to 3rd. Trying to watch runner and ball, for some reason I just felt like I might be in the way of a throw from outfield if they were trying to get BR going into 3rd. SO I ask you all what do you do to keep out of the way? I went deep (more toward home than normal) so I could watch BR and look over shoulder....but just felt like I had my back to the ball and that made me nervous especially with the skill level of the defensive team!

I'm a rookie, but wouldn't it be best here to go inside. Since the ball's in the outfield and you're having to follow the runner around, it seems best to be inside the baseline.

You have the ball, runner and defense in front of you and you're out of the way of a potential throw.

Am I correct everyone? Feedback appreciated.

I was inside but if i am running to 3rd and the ball is coming in from right field I don't have the ball in front of me it is behind me. that is where my delima comes from I am having to run sideways and look over my shoulder to find the ball.

I think that what the OP's problem is once he has rounded second and is going to third, he is naturally turned away from the incoming throw. Been there, done that. This is one of those times where merely instinct and a constant check of the ball/runner back and forth will keep you out of the throwing lane.

Skahtboi - Agreed. If you have the means, do a side-step (think basketball) to keep the runner in front of you and the throw in your peripheral. I personally back about 12' to 15' away from 3B going down the foul line towards HP, then come in closer as appropriate. If the throw's off, then I let it dictate where I go (either move out of the way or move in for a possible tag).

No problem. By the time you have the BR moving toward 2B, you should have been able to locate the ball and any infielder which moved out for a cut. From this info, you should be able to determine the most likely (obviously, not guaranteed) path the ball will take to 3B.

When approaching 3B using a siddle, you should be able to sneak a peripheral peek toward right. If necessary, back off away from the baseline a little bit, but be prepared to move toward the base for a possible play upon the arrival of the ball. Once you get beyond the line from 1B to 3B, you are in a relatively safe area as it pertains to getting in the middle of a potential play.

Obviously, this is something that is easier to demonstrate then put into words, but it works.
