Arriving inside confines of the playing field, walking fence
line, also looking towards infield watching action and for
possible wild throws conking me from behind, note that the
visiting catcher - pitcher are warming on in front of ther
dugout. I approach and ask the young lady pitching is she
going to be the pitcher today. She is, so I tell catcher she
must wear her mask. And I get this line alot...
<font color = red>"I don't have to have a mask on, unless I am kneeling."</font>.
When her coach comes to the plate for
pre-game, she now gets on me, for making her <i>catcher</i> don
her mask when she is merely standing receiving under throws from
the pitcher. I showed her the rule after the game and how I could
have ejected her player for not complying. She told me that she
really never knew that was the rule.

Good job Glen!You are absolutely correct in making her put on catchers mask.As long as the pitcher is throwing with a "pitching motion",the catcher must wear a mask even if she is standing on her head.

LOL..........good for you........in a tournament last weekend.......I pointed out to my daughter's HS coach that the catcher did not have a mask on...........

She told me......it's no prob.........she's standing.........

I told her.........don't matter.........

She corrected it.........

She is the one of the best coaches this daughter has had ............and a good friend.........

I coached her daughter for 4 years in Soccer..........turnabouts fair play............grin

Fed casebook play 1.1.7A states that the pitcher and a player without a mask "may play catch". It doesn't state that they have to throw overhand. The NC Supervisior of Officials has interpertated that to mean that a person is warming up a pitcher when they are in a crouch. They are playing catch when both are standing erect.

Fed baseball is treated the same way.(It has a identical casebook play) Does your interpertation mean that a person playing catch with the pitcher in a Fed baseball game without a mask must throw underhanded? (big G)

Roger,
The way that situation is written, it is saying the team
does not have a mask with a proper throat protector and
cannot procure a throat protector from visiting team. Now,
my question is how is this coaches' team going to play this
game? They going to play "catch" the whole game. Funning
nautrually. :D

I understand what they are getting at in the case book situation.
Warming up another pitcher while game is going on. Great, and to be
honest, I rarely see a relief pitcher and catcher warming up during the game.
Unless of course they have to be on the field down one of
the foul lines and then she will be wearing that mask and
have a spotter.
However, when I arrive at a park, inside confines of field
and that pitcher/catcher team are warming up, that catcher
better have the mask on and I am fully covered by rule to
insure that she wears that mask. They will always either
put the mask on or stop warming up. That is their choice.
