A question for ASA slow pitch guys

Help settle a debate. I realize this is kind of silly, but...

If you're working a game wearing shorts, do you wear white or black socks?

It is obviously a local decision, but the three-ringed, white pull-ups, I believe, are the preferred uniform. However, it does depend on where you are standing at the time.

I wear the white ankle socks when I call SP with shorts.

I hate the way those "booties" look on the ball field

Then don't use them. :D

Stu Clary Wed Mar 19, 2008 01:36pm

OK. Sounds like the concensus is white socks...but white socks looks SO dorky with black shoes.

:D When I wear shorts, I'm also wearing sandles - so no socks for me.:D

Dukat Wed Mar 19, 2008 02:09pm

Mike - I agree with most of what you say but I can't imagine anyone thinking that full size socks with black shoes and shorts look better than the ankle socks. With the ankle socks the socks become less noticeable altogether IMHO.

Well, not everyone looks that good with fullly-bared legs, either. Do I believe there could probably be more durable socks made available? Yeah, to a point. Then again, the white pull-ups have always lasted me a season

If a state UIC will permit the wearing of shorts for SP championship play, I don't think it is too much to ask that you wear the requested uniform, do you?

Can you point to me in the rules or umpire manual where shorts are part of the approved uniform for SP championship play?
;)

It must be on the same page where it states that timers are not permitted to be suspended from the backstop during a game in which a clock is utilized.:p

Requested uniform? Requested by whom?

There's plenty of non-approved stuff for sale at officialgear.com

What's your point? Nobody said there wasn't, yet this is the first line of defense for someone trying to wear something on the field that is not approved by the local association or UIC.

If I am wearing shorts on the field...someone shoot me, please.

Chess Ref Wed Mar 19, 2008 10:13pm

Around here it's customary to wear shorts in the summer SP leagues. The white socks seem to be venturing into Felix Unger land.

The Irish and his tube socks is a little too much to think about.:)

I would prefer to wear black socks but our UIC says no.

I play in tennis tournaments and I get to wear black socks, like Andre Agassi, and I look so much cooler than the other kids.

wadeintothem Wed Mar 19, 2008 10:28pm

why do I keep hearing Rainman say "it's definately time to go to Kmart and buy my long white socks with big blue stripes".

NDblue Wed Mar 19, 2008 10:35pm

I guess I missed the memo that says the 1970's tube sock was the prefered sock with shorts. Heck, our state UIC wears the ankle socks with the ASA logo on them just like I do. The ONLY time I wear pants is if I'm doing FP and yes, we wear shorts during some state championship play.

My guess, it's the "or something"!

This discussion, if nothing else, is entertaining.

"How to look dignified (or kuel, dude) while wearing shorts." I'm surprised nobody wants the baggy shorts that hang below the knee and expose the boxers. Do you also wear adjustable caps backwards, too?
