Whats your call?

Ball hit slowly down 3B line. Ball right on the line when F5 attempts to field the ball. R1, running from 3B to HP crashes into F5 preventing F5 from fielding the ball. The ball is never touched, rolls into foul territory and stops before reaching 3B.

What’s your call? What do you do with the BR?

It was a fair ball when dead ball is called for the interference. What happens after the dead ball call doesn't matter.

R1 is out for interference.
Award BR first. From the post, I'm assuming that R1 wasn't trying to prevent a double play.

ASA. Runner out for INT with F5. BR to 1B.

If F5 had no chance to field the ball before it went foul, then foul ball. But the OP says that the crash prevented F5 from fielding the ball.

Just to have some fun - rule set ASA:

What is the call if the ball is foul at time of interference, but has the chance of rolling fair?

What is the call if the ball is rolling down the 1B line and is foul at the time of interference with the B-R, but has the chance of rolling fair?

Per the discussion from 1.5 years ago, delay making a call, wait to see if the ball goes fair. If the ball stays in foul territory, it is nothing but a foul. If the ball goes fair, now call interference.

ASA doesn't cover this, since for interference on a runner can only be called if the runner interferes with a fielder attempting to field a fair batted ball or a foul fly ball.

Dead ball. Interference on BR. ASA 8.2.F.1

Edited to add the the bold portion of rule 8.7.J.1

ASA doesn't cover this, since for interference on a runner can only be called if the runner interferes with a fielder attempting to field a fair batted ball.

How about a fly ball over foul territory? Runner on 3B off on the pitch. Batter hits a soft pop down the 3B line 10 feet short of the bag. Runner reverses direction and unintentionally runs into F5 just before the ball, over foul territory, hits off F5's glove. That's a foul ball according to ASA's definition, and the runner is out.

(Interesting that there's still a debate in OBR about how to call that play. If you go strictly by the book, you award the batter 1B.)

In ASA, batter is also out (foul or fair fly ball with runner interference).

Absolutely right, if we judge the fly to be "routine," requiring "ordinary effort."

I think I missed it 1½ years ago, but if it goes fair then wouldn't you have to call interference which would mean the ball would be dead at the time of the interference, which would mean the ball was foul at the time of interference, which brings us back to a foul ball meaning no interference, which means the ball did roll fair, which means interference did occur.....

My brain hurts.
