New NCAA Umpire Improvement Program Manual

So...the new format for the NCAA UIP Manual will be "book bound" soft cover that we all will have to purchase, presumably year after year. How many of you prefer this concept to the old style, download and add the pages to your binder concept?

Scott,

I have seen a copy of the manual from another sport. Ours will be very similar. You will like the new format. I know you would rather download the updates, but this new manual will be worth the small expense.

I understand that there was feedback from a lot of umpires around the country that they wanted a soft-cover, bound version of the manual that would be easy to carry in the equipment bag. Similar to the rulebook.

I believe the UIP is patterning this new manual after the NCAA Baseball Umpire manual. I'm willing to give it a shot.....

Best solution...offer the book bound version, but still provide the updates as they do now for those that have already created their own notebook (as I did) :)

Not Happening. The bound manual is the way we will get it now. Here is the full link:

It is available now for purchase from Referee magazine. $19.95

Larry. Have you received one yet? Is it essentially the same information as the old version?

DNTXUM P Thu Nov 29, 2007 04:33pm

Scott,

I ordered it yesterday. Don't expect it until next week. They are having the coordinators meeting this weekend. Any changes should be announced there. The only one I am aware of now and Emily has already announced it is the fly ball coverage discussed here earlier when the 3B umpire is at 3B, he will now always have from center fielder to left field fence rather than the 1B ump taking from LF to RF when in the B position, now the 3B will take from CF to fence and 1B ump will take from CF to RF. If any further changes are coming out, we should know by Monday.

Thanks Larry. Guess I will run home and order one myself.

Scott,

Just got my manual today. It is entirely different from last years. The manual gives you the appropriate information, but it more of a dialog format designed to get you to think about why we do things rather than just giving you spots on the field to go to. I think everyone will enjoy this book

Hey Larry,

I tried to send you a private message through this forum today, and got back this reply:

Apparently you have the private message option on here blocked. I will try to remember to shoot you an email later on about what I was pm-ing you about.

Scott,

Sorry, I didn't choose not to receive messages, I just did not log on to be able to do so. I will try to change that now. If not, my email is [email protected]

Mine came yesterday - it makes for some interesting reading. But I'll miss being able to have it as a pdf on every computer I use..........

BretMan Fri Dec 07, 2007 11:03pm

Yeah, even though I'm not an NCAA umpire, it made for some good reading.

So many different situations were covered in such detail that I recommended it as "self study" training material for the very young umpires in a few rec leagues I've worked. Being on-line seemed to make it easy for the kids to get into it.

Alas...no more...

I found a package from Referee magazine in my mail box addressed to my GF today. Either the woman who leaves the room when any spot comes on the tv is starting to umpire NCAA Softball, or Santa actually looked at my x-mas list this year. :)
