Two Rules I've Never Heard
 

High school:

1. Runner thrown out at home apparently says something under her breath. Ump hears it and says "#24 is confined to the bench." Confined? How do you know when to confine someone vs eject them?

2. You know how girls wear pre-wrap that is sort of like a stretchy hairband? The umpire said today that if it fell down around a player's neck more than once the girl would be out.????? What is this?

NFHS rules state that an "ejected" player is restricted to bench. Although, in the situation that you stated, this might be a case of OOO. The second situation is certainly an OOO.

Am I correct that an ejected player is a)finished for the day and b)must sit out the next game after today? If so, this player must have only been "confined" and not ejected since she played the 2nd and 3rd games of the day and was told by the umpire that she would be able to play in the district tourney on Monday.


Is the 2nd question even a real rule? Or did she just make this up?

Must be the state rule then. SO are you saying there is no special rule in high school fastpitch that allows an ump to "confine" a player that would be different than ejecting the player?

In the first place I don't "hear that," unless it is loud enough for others to hear. Secondly, the umpire has the option of a warning or ejection. Restriction to the bench is not an option. IMO, a warning is the proper call; ejections have too many harsh penalties. So - poor reaction, and then wrong call by umpire.

This is making up rules. Umpire needs some training.

NFHS has four levels of unsporting behavior management available to umpires.

1. Team warning; next offender is punished.
2. Individual warning; that individual is punished for 2nd offense.
3. Restriction to bench for the rest of the game.
4. Ejection from the game. Even if ejected, the player is required to remain in the dugout (unless she is signed out to the responsibility of her parents, or if a coach is available to sit with her in the parking lot or on team bus).
These are defined in rule 3.6 Bench & Field Conduct.

Most State Associations establish additional punishments for players ejected from a high school contest. Typically they are done for the rest of the day, and for the next day of play. (Not the next day - the next time you play.) So if a player is in a tournament or DH, and the next day of play is a tournament or DH, an ejected player can lose a lot of games.

Ejection can be very tough on VB, SB, or BB players as they often have multiple matches or games on a single day. Others (ie., football or basketball or soccer) usually play single games so they would lose only two games.
