Where does the field umpire postion himself? Who has first base safe/out responsibility?

with a runner on 1st (only) the BU is in the 'B' position, about 20-25 feet into fair territory, and about 4-6' deeper than the second baseman. Of course this can change depending on exactly where the second baseman is playing, but thats the general rule.

The BU has first base safe/out responsibility in this and all other (common) situations. Example of uncommon situation ... if R1 gets caught in a rundown between 1st & 2nd and the PU comes up the line to help then he/she would have 1st base in that case.
