rosin:3rd base
Fed game. Today between innings I noticed the 3rd baseman stick her hand in her pocket, pull out a rosin bag with her throwing hand for a second or so, then go back to throwing before the inning started. I didn't do anything because it was the last inning in a lopsided game and I wasn't really sure if there was a rule preventing it. 6-2-2 speaks of supervising the pitcher in her use of powdered resin. Is there anything in the rules about the other players?

Keep looking for something you think might be illegal about this. :)
(PS - it's a good thing you didn't have a close game on your hands - or you might have tried to enforce a non-existant rule). |
Besides, its resin! (Hijack warning....)

So, what would a 3rd baseman have a resin/rosin bag for? Why, I suspect to dry her sweaty hand. Did she ever apply it to the game ball? If she takes out that resin/rosin bag, and puts it on the game ball, THEN you have a foreign substance applied to the ball, and an illegal pitch should be called. If not, don't look for a problem that isn't there. Nothing you mentioned was illegal, or even inappropriate. |
Thanks gentlemen. I didn't think there was a problem but for some reason it seemed odd. Maybe I simply hadn't seen it before. Just asking.

Okay, here's a sticky resin question for you...
Watching college games on TV the past few weeks and saw the same pitcher do this in two different games. Can't even remember what team she was on- maybe Arkansas? At the conclusion of each inning, she would go toward the back of the circle, pick up her ro/esin bag with her bare hand, sling it into her glove, in the same manner you would fling a ball into your glove, then run for the dugout. She had to be getting rosin all over her glove when she did that. Tell her to stop? Check her glove? Let it go (which seems to be what the umpires did)? If that's not applying rosin to your glove, what is? |

Thanks, guys.
I would have to imagine that somewhere along the line rosin was being transfered to the ball. When she would flip the bag into her glove you could see a white cloud poofing out! Had to have powder in the glove and the ball would eventually be in that same glove. No big deal, I guess. It just looked odd to see the pitcher doing that throughout the game. The only reason I though about it twice was from all the resin/rosin discussions we've had on these boards! |
