I think if you never go back, then this AD will go on thinking his behavior was not only appropriate but supported. He should be reprimanded and punished. I think I'd have handled this very similarly to the way you did. You don't say exactly where he is, but if he was ON the field during the early exchange, I think it's pretty likely I'd have officially ejected him right then and there. AD's have no more authority during a game than Joe Generic Fan.
