R1 on 1st no outs, B2 hits short pop fly to left that is caught by F7, R1 has gone half way and starts retreating to 1st on the catch F7 throws to 1st but a wild throw goes DBT.

R1 awarded 3rd two bases on over throw or 2nd?

Thanks

TWO bases from the last base legally touched (1B) - R1 gets 3B. But the runner has to retouch 1B. Why would you think R1 would get 2B?

Don,

All runners will be awarded two bases, and the award
will be governed by the positions of the runners when the
ball left the fielder's hand. Runners may return to
touch a missed base or base left too soon. If two runners
are between the same bases, the award is based on the
position of the lead runner. [ASA Rule 8 Sec. 6 G. Effect.]

Don,
If I recall correctly, the only time you award a single base on a thrown ball that goes into DBT is when the pitcher throws a pitch(from the rubber) that goes out of play.

thanks

That's what I thought and awarded last night but I did get some argument from the defensive team and the base ump who is a very good veteren ump had 1st pointed the runner to 2nd before I stepped in and awarded third. I just wanted to be sure I was correct by ASA rules

The old 1+1 myth...

I'll bet your partner was making the award using the old "base they are going to plus 1" myth. She was going to 1B, so +1 base would be 2B. It is myth #17 in Gulf Coast Blue's list of myths. Check out this link below.

I don't believe it is a myth, just a different set of rules. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was once told (not too long ago) that under U-trip, the runner would only be allowed to advance to 2B in this scenario.

Not according to their online rules...

I don't call Utrip, but this is from their web site:

2001 - 2002 USSSA Fast Pitch Official Playing Rules

RULE 9. BASERUNNING

Sec.15. Each runner including the batter-runner is awarded:

C. Two bases:

3. If a live thrown ball (not by a pitcher from the pitcherÂ’s plate as in item D) goes into a stand for spectators, or a playersÂ’ bench, or over or through or lodges in a fence.

5. [If the fielder] Intentionally carries or throws ball into dead-ball territory.

So, their rule is the same - 2 bases.

Yes, but the question is what 2 bases do they get?

Is it from the last legally touched base or two from where the runner is standing at the time. Remember, in the scenario here, the runner was returning to 1B. Some people believe the 1B would be #1 & 2B would be #2.

I'm surprised there are no U-trip Red on this board.

I think Roger calls some U-Trip ball.

All right, Mike...

Re USSSA. The 99 rules had that 1+1 rule in them. Man, did I hate that. Since 2000 they changed to a normal 2 bases from TOP like everybody else.

I think those red shirts look good, but my partner and I stick with the all navey baseball hat with logo. (We do more baseball anyway.)
