Hey Mike,
When is this tournament again? I think it's about now. Hope I didn't miss it completely.:(

Fly in this coming Sunday, Manager's Meeting on Monday and play Tuesday through Thursday, weather permitting.

Larry, if you stop by, the umpire's are in the Women's Fitness Center directly behind Foster Stadium. Just walk in and introduce yourself to whomever.

You must be a UWF grad or a parent of one

Sorry to hijack this thread! But I have to ask, Larry, are you a graduate of UWF? With a name like argodad I thought there must be some affiliation. I graduated from UWF in 1988. My dad was stationed at Hurlburt Field which used to be an auxiliary field of Eglin AFB, now I believe it is a separate base entirely.

Small world!

I had the priviledge of meeting Larry today at Eglin. As usual, it is always nice to put a face to the name

My DD graduated from UWF this May. (Actually, Coach Cyr had the seniors "walk" down the aisle of the bus on the way to the Gulf South Conference tournament while the rest of her class was participating in graduation exercises.) She redshirted in 2002, then played four years for the Argos. I watched as many games from outside the chain link during that time as I called.

And it was nice to meet you, Mike!

So, is the mascot named Jason? If yes, for the comic strip or ancient Greek legend?

Argonaut mascot

They are named after the Greek myth. When Jason went off in search of the Golden Fleece, he sailed on a ship called the Argo, hence his men were the Argonauts.

They have a student dressed up as a Greek warrior -- a bit like the Michigan State Spartan. Sometimes they call him Jason. Sometimes they call him "Argie."

But since the school emblem is a chambered nautilus, a lot of opponents call them the "Fighting Snails."

:D Funny.

But, wrong.

Snails are gastropods.

The chambered nautilus is a cephalopod.

They'd at least be in the same class of mollusk if they called them "fighting squid" - but it wouldn't be as funny.
