Fourth inning of close game....coach for
visitors, (also winning at this point)
has a player disqualified for not being
reported. (*Note - coach has three subs
sitting on bench). Coach informs PU that
he will be playing shorthanded for the
remainder of the game. Informed him that
this is not an option, that he has subs,
please give me name/nbr/pos and lets play
ball. After severals minutes of heated
discussion - and the Joel look ---informed
coach that he would have to enter sub for
game to continue. He says ok....but will be
playing game under protest. Informed score-
keeper and opposing coach, entered his subs
info and went on. He eventually loses game.

Protest being reviewed. Feel confident that
under POE 42 F, I have a winner. Guess what
I need here is back up from some of the experts,
or a rule that I have missed and have blown it:o

Oh, the coach can play shorthanded, with the caveat that none of the players on the bench are eligible to play the remainder of the game and that if a player is injured, ejected or DQ'd for any reason, the game is over.

If a substitute is available, they MUST enter the game or forfeit their eligibility for that game.

Mike hit the answer to that question on the money.Also,under the shorthanded rule,an out is given to that vacated spot in the batting order.I sure hope that this wasnt a girls fastpitch game.I hope this coach didnt want to deprieve a young lady an oppertunity to play for the sake of winning.

Mike, can they go shorthanded with available
subs? POE #42 F. states "Playing shorthanded is not
a strategic option for a coach...etc..etc" Could
I get him on an unsportsmanlike conduct violation?

I am not comfortable with letting coach *get away*
with not utilizing the available subs he has. To
me this is pentalizing the players, and not coach...
use that "term" loosely.

Not our job to worry about playing time, it's the coaches. On the other hand, the umpire has not authority to tell a coach he MUST enter a player into the game. What would happen if the players were hurt and just in uniform in case of an emergency and the coach decided that particular game wasn't worth the players risk aggravating that injury.

What do you think is going to happen if the umpire tells the coach he MUST enter the player or forfeit the game? You will lose that protest. What happens if the coach does what you demand and the player re-injures themselves? I don't know how likely it is, but you could be looking at litigation.

If a coach says s/he has no substitutes, there are no substitutes. However, it should be noted who is on the bench at that time and the coach should be told that they are no longer eligible for that game.

You are right, guess I was little angry at
the thought of a coach not wanting to put in
an available player, because in his opinion
they had lesser skills and could effect the
outcome of his *victory*. Did find out after
the game that none of the players were injuried,
except pride wise now thanks to coach.

Mike, good call. We can't make him put players in the game, but as you noted, once he refuses to enter a player, all other subs on the bench are now ineligible.

If a substitute is in uniform, and on the bench, unless the coach informs me at the pregame that he/she is injured or being disciplined and will play only if necessary (I've had that happen), that player is an eligible sub. If there are eligible subs on the bench, they have to be used if there is an injury or ejection.
