Now that a runner stealing from 2nd to 3rd is the PU's call at 3rd, what is the logic behind having the BU start on the 2nd base side of the 2nd baseman any time there is a runner on 2nd?

Seems arbitrary to have the BU start on the 2nd base side of the 2nd baseman when the PU is going to have every call at 3rd involving that runner except for the fly ball and tag-up when they are the lone runner (question of my other post) (this also seems odd, as starting on the 1sst base side of the 2nd baseman would provide for a wider angle as the BU comes inside to pick up the catch and tag-up - whole other question) - especially when there is a slight shift by the 2nd baseman toward 2nd base to try to compensate for pull hitters. It seems that this position just takes the BU further away from the call at 1st they will have to make more often than not. Is there a trail-runner coverage principle I'm missing or something?

Potential pick-off, throw back on a line drive, etc.

Try to not let the players take away your responsibilities. Adjust your positioning, but remember to keep out of their view. Always trying to find a good safe position on a 5 man infield.
