Slowest Triple Play ever

Bases loaded, no outs. Batter lines to F6, who immediately tags R2 who had moved about 3 steps on the pitch and didn't have time to get back. R1, who had not moved off the base at all until after the catch, jogs home unnoticed as F6 celebrates. Coaches yell, "That's 5!" (5 run per inning rule in this league), and everyone but the pitcher runs off the field. F6 had rolled the ball to the mound. R3 went straight from the vicinity of F4 to her third base dugout. At least 10 seconds go by as 1 singular assistant coach is yelling at her pitcher to stop. Finally gets her attention about 2 steps shy of the foul line, tells her to go get the ball. Then tells her to go touch 1st. She finally does so. BU has actually already gone to his holding area in RF, as I'm watching and waiting. This whole thing had to take at least 45 seconds. Triple play.

If R1 was the fifth run, then inning over as there was no force play remaining to nullify the run by R1. Technically, it would be a triple play under regular circumstances or if R1 was only the 1-4 runs scored.

I disagree, Joe, unless the locally written 5 run limit rule makes that clear.

Just because there is a 5 run limit does not mean that all other rules are moot regarding ending of an inning. The was like an advantageous 4th out in that while the inning may have been over for scoring purposes, the inning ending appeal process is still available.

Perhaps I should clarify there... the 3rd out didn't nullify the run (as it was a timing play) - but the "tiebreaker" if both teams hit the run limit the same number of times is the number of outs recorded in the innings where the run limit was reached. Yes... a stupid local rule - but still a rule, and the out counted for those purposes. As umpires, we never announce that a team has gotten 5 runs - the 5th run doesn't kill the play, and you can get a 6th or 7th run (neither of which counts 99% of the time - but which COULD matter if the original 5th run missed a base or something). The ball was still live until everyone left the field.

Why not? In most rule sets, if the BR gets put out prior to reaching first, no runs score. Unless, of course, your local 5 run limit rule specifically overrides this.

(Sorry to open a dead post...)

If the home team was up 5, the game should continue because the runner from 3rd does score, making it a 4 run game, right?

Batter-runner lined out; made the first out, not the third out, and released all other force outs. All other outs are a timing play.

Huh?

The game continued because it was the first inning, and there were 40-something minutes left to be played.

I don't understand your question.

Ah, sorry :o , R3 left early from first and was (clearly) not the BR. Maybe I should have gotten more sleep last night.
