Our HS coach entered a courtesy for our catcher in the 1st & 3rd innings. She later used the same girl as a pinch hitter. I am a firm believer that this was illegal as the player had already entered. Any ideas on this? THX

I am going to assume that you're using Fed rules, since this was a high school team. A CR is a player who has not been in this game, but is eligible to come in. A CR for the catcher may not be a CR for the pitcher. But, the CR may be used as a sub in a later half-inning. From your description, I suspect this was perfectly legal.

Courtesy runners CAN pinch hit later in the game.

If a pinch runner came in twice then her re-entries would be over and she would be done for the day. Maybe this is what you are thinking about.

Like Steve says. Only thing I am wondering is, did the coach keep the girl in the lineup or take her out, then use her as a CR. This would be illegal.

Yes! She pinch ran twice and the catcher re-entered. She didn't stay in to play a position, however , she pinch hit an inning later. Thanks for the input!

The reason I'm asking is I use TurboStats for Softball on my PC and when I went to enter the stats for this player, she had scored 2 runs as a CR, but she had only 1 AB. The stat software figured it was impossible to score 2 runs with only 1 AB and it kicks up an error. I want to track her runs and her AB's but they just don't jive!

A courtesy runner for the pitcher or catcher can enter for them any time they reach base. By rule, this is not considered a substitution.

Now, a CR can later enter the game for another player as a sub, but then they lose the ability to be a CR for the remainder of the game.

PS: Thats why I've been too leery of using a baseball/softball stat program. It might not understand all the nuances of the game, such as the CR rule as you've pointed out with your software. I use an excel template. More manual work, but at least it's ina format _I_ like and the coaches tolerate.

A CR is not a pinch-runner and is not considered as having entered the game as a substitute.

If she pinched ran twice and the catcher re-entered each time....<b>Delaware we have a problem.</b> However, if she was utilized as a CR twice, then the catcher did not re-enter, she just continued playing her position.

Hell, just about everything is legal in KY :D

I think the only difference between Fed rules in KY and in TX or DE is that after she is a courtesy runner twice, and then legally pinch hits, she can still marry her cousin in the evening in KY.

Legal in all the States that actually follow published rules, all rule sets, as long as it is not in the same half-inning the player was a CR. As said, a CR has not "entered".
