Waiting to go on the field and watching some of the game taking place.

1 out, batter is hit on the ankle by a very hard thrown pitch. She
attempted to go to 1B, but could not manage the trip. Her coach came
out, picked her up and carried her to their dugout.

What would you have called?

(I will tell you what the blues handling the game called after a few responses.)

Put a sub on 1st and play on. This seems like a prime example of keeping the intent of rules in mind. I.e. the intent of the rule that would call her out for entering the dugout, being assisted by the coach etc. are not being violated here. Safety and the health of the players comes first.

I'm dying to know what the blues did.

Man....I hope they did nothing.... put the sub on first and play on....why WOULD you do anything different....

CecilOne Fri Mar 17, 2006 01:44am

Presumably would have called time when the inability became apparent, before the coach arrived.

Ball was dead already, so why do you need to call 'time' in this situation?

Just let the coach take care of his/her player and wait for the announcement of a substitute runner OR wait a reasonable period of time to let B1/R1 to come back in the game, on 1st base bag.

WOW!

I thought it was only common sense and the right way to read the 'spirit of the rule'....
But much better than that I (a-hem) discovered ther's a SPECIFIC rule for this on ISF Rulebook!!

It reads:
Rule 9 (Dead ball - Live ball)
Sec.1 (THE BLL IS DEAD)
i. When an accident to a batter-runner or runner prevents him from proceeding to the awarded base, he may be
substituted. The substitute will be allowed to proceed to any awarded bases. The substitute must legally touch all
awarded or missed bases not previously touched.

Same in ASA (4.6.E)

Eagerly awaiting Whiskers' repost, as I can see no reason in any code to do anything other than place the sub on first base (assuming a sub is available).

Unfortunately, these two decided the act was an assist by the coach, and that
the player entered DDBT. Thus, an out. The argument that followed, got the
coach restricted to the bench. One was a five year vet softball umpire,
the other a newbie from BB. The newbie was PU and called the out, but got
no help from his partner in rectifying the sitch. Both will lose two
weeks on the schedule.

UGLY....

Man.

I can't even imagine my newest of newbies dropping this one. But a 5-year guy? Abysmal.

Ouch!

streamdoc Fri Mar 17, 2006 11:44am

Yeahhh! I got one right!

azbigdawg Fri Mar 17, 2006 07:59pm

What PLEASES me about the actual situation is that the umpires got time off. In situations like this..they DESERVE it...Im not trying to be hard on them...but if you just THINK about this one...(you dont even have to pick up a rule book)..its OBVIOUS.....

Steve M Fri Mar 17, 2006 09:04pm

What Darrell said, followed by an Amen.
