ASA 12U Championship Game. Home team is from Winner's Bracket.

Bottom of 7th, 2 out, home team down by 3 with bases loaded. Line drive out of the reach of F3 who is playing up. As the ball is heading towards a shallow F9, it clips R3 on the left leg.

What's your call?

Gulf Coast Blue Tue Jun 19, 2001 08:03am

Even though it passed F3...........if in my judgement F9 has an opportunity to make an out........I have a "dead ball" R3 is out..........BALL GAME. I know I have seen a ton of BR's thrown out by F9.........so it is likely to have interfernce on this play.

If I judged that F9 could not make an out.........play on.

I'm glad to see someone bring this site back alive!

Anyway my answer would be live ball play on unless F9 was shallow enough to be in the infield at TOP according to 8-9-D states: When a runner is hit with a fair, untouched batted ball that has passed an infielder, excluding the pitcher, and in the judgement of the umpire no other INFIELDER had a chance to make an out

EFFECT: Runner is not out

Thanks Don........

I believe I kicked that one.........I must have looked over the first two letters in infielder.

Not so quick, Joel. ASA Rule 8.8.K, the runner is out "When the runner is struck with a fair batted ball while not in contact with a base and before it passes an infielder, excluding the pitcher, or if it passes an infielder and any fielder has an opportunity to make an out."

Please note that the second half of this rule simply says "fielder", not infielder.

:D
Dang, gotta learn to read and type faster.
Irish correct. Cannot add anything else
to this one.

AHA................

When I made my first run at this this morning.......I was at home with my 2001 book........

When Don brought doubt to my mind......I looked in the 2000 book and it said infielder.......(8-8-K.......my 1999 book also says infielder)..........

The bad thing is......I had an argument with another ump in my association just a couple of weeks ago and I insisted that the book said........"fielder" and he said "infielder"......neither one of us had the documentation to prove it........

One thing..........I will NEVER.......look in my older books to cite a rule..............:D.......well.......maybe if I have too.

Shucks.......

I was right after all...........

Mike,

Has there been a rule change since the earlier editions or was IN just omitted in the 2001 book on 8-8-K, as 8-9-D says INfielders??

Is there a case play in the case book that cover this??

Just wondering

Don

It could be print error, not listed in the
changes section. 1998, 1999, & 2000 do all
state INfielder. Publisher :o

ASA Casebook 2001

Play 8.8-45

The batted ball passes F6 without being touched by him and no other fielder has a chance to make an out on the ball when R1 is hit by the ball.

Ruling

The ball is live, no infraction (8-8K; 8-1E[2])

Now, here is another fly in the pudding. 8.1.E.2 also states "infielder" as does 8.9.P!

I seem to recollect that the wording was changed a few years ago from infielder to fielder as the powers that be took into consideration shallow outfielders in the JO game and the fifth man in the infield at the higher level SP games.

It just seems to have been overlooked by those who proof and edit the book.

Interestingly enough, Fed has this same wording problem. The rule book sez fielder and the case book sez infielder. I spoke to a rules committee member and he said the missed it on the case book. So, for Fed purposes, this would be interference if F9 had a play.

Mike, several of us were down your way yesterday - did a game at the Vet for the Carpenter's Cup series.

Mike,

You seem to have a typo. Should your reference
8.9.P be 8.9.D! As Joel would say Shucks.....No
big deal.:)

Gulf Coast Blue Wed Jun 20, 2001 09:01pm

In ASA.......once I looked at 8-8-k...........I never glanced at 8-9-d (until Don brought the doubt into my mind)......since the wording was almost the same......I figured my crappy eyes missed something.

Thanks for looking that up Mike.......I put in 15 hours today........and am about too darn tired to have hunted the casebook myself.........:D
