This is actually a clean up change. It really shouldn't change the way an umpire calls the game.

The "above the batter's head" has been a myth when it comes to a batted ball being caught for an out. The only thing it couldn't have been in the past is a foul tip.

Unfortunately it is a myth that has been ingrained in most adult players for so long that to call it any other way is asking for a fight from even the team that gets the call. I actually had this happen to me earlier this year where the defensive captain came to me while the offensive captain was arguing this point and told me that the ball wasn't high enough and I shouldn't call the batter out. I said 'OK, if that's how you both want it.' It is their game and it happens so rarely in SP that I let it go. At least with this clean up there is nothing in the rules that gives any argument to that myth.

Upset Coach - You can't call him out on that!
Umpire - Why not?
Upset Coach - Because it wasn't high enough!
Grinning Umpire - High enough for what?
Really Upset Coach - High enough to be called out!
Smiling umpire - Umpire - Really? Says who?
Irate Coach - It's a rule!
Smiling Umpire really enjoying him/herself - Show me. Until then, stay in the dugout.

That ends the discussion and the umpire just got a two-minute breather. ;)
