I was perusing the Honigs web site to see what
gear I'll be needing for the upcoming 2006 FHSAA
high school season.
I see they sell a red colored "baserunning violation flag"
which looks like a red version of the yellow penalty flag
that I carry for football.
OK--I bite. What is it for ???

Little League baseball... leaving the base before the ball reaches the plate.

Also for Dixie Softball. They also require the "dropping of a flag" to indicate the same violation. However, most people just use a delayed dead ball signal, since the flag really indicates the same thing.

The obvious answer, instant replay. It is not for the officials but the coaches, however we will be required to have two red flags at all contests to insure that both benches will be properly equipt.

I've been doing this since 1957 and I never saw
such a thing. The delayed dead ball signal should
do the job---as it always has !

OH NO !

Maybe this topic should be hidden before anyone gets any ideas.

SWFL - what rule set do you work? If ASA, then the DDB signal is not the correct one to use for a runner leaving the base early. The correct signal is the "She's OUT" signal, accompanied, of course, by a loud verbal "She's OUT!"

If you're working Dixie - go buy the silly flag... or I can send you mine!

I did LL for a while but at the time, no one sold them. We had some in our organization that used red wash cloths.

I used a red shop rag, realizing it was a case of "You might be a red neck if..."

With or without the grease and tobaccy stains? :D

I currently work only high school ball
under the FHSAA which basically goes by the
National Federation rules. I know a runner
leaving a base early is an immediate dead ball
--OUT; was thinking maybe they used the red
flag somewhere for something like obstruction.

Nope. It is for leaving the base early. In the younger divisions of Dixie softball, leaving the base early is not an out. Instead, it is a delayed dead ball. When all playing action has ceased, the offended team's coach has the option of taking whatever parts of the play he wants to take.

Yes, I have one, because of the one year that our local association chose to use the absurd Dixie ruleset.

Man! You just said a mouthful!!!

Let me say one thing to anyone considering going with Dixie rules out there...

Our girls, even the good teams that succeeded in the Dixie Tournament, were seriously outclassed when they went back to ASA and tried to compete outside the area. Just don't do it!
