Just seeing the pictures on the news depressed me a little, as I was just down in Gulfport about a month ago, to work the National Softball Association of the Deaf tournament. Many of the places along the beachfront I had the opportunity to visit before and after the tournament. Hard to believe they are either all gone or severely damaged. This hurricane was a monster indeed.

While watching the news, I noticed the backside of Hard Rock Casino fell off into the Gulf of Mexico. When I was down there, it was still under construction and scheduled to open during Labor Day weekend. Guess that won't be happening now.

They also mentioned that the Beau Rivage Hotel/Casino was flooded up to the 3rd floor. Having been there, that really strikes me how big the swell was, as that place is HUGE! Unbelieveable what this hurricane did.

I got a call this morning from a college in Marion, Alabama (3 hours north of Mobile). I guess the weather "was rough" but it wasn't quite as bad as everyone else got.

Seeing the damage lastnight on TV defies any description. It really makes you put things in perspective.

May our thoughts (and prayers*) go out to those who are directly or indirectly affected by the hurricane.

I live in Bryant, AR (15 min SW of Little Rock) and we have gotten many of the people fleeing from the hurricane. All of our hotels in central AR are filled to capacity. I went by to try to do my part and pay for a night for a family to stay and the desk clerk tells me that these folks are just happy to get socks. I'm going today to pick up some things like socks, t-shirts, board games, and toys and take it to the hotels.

As I was pumping that $3/gallon gas in my car yesterday I was approached by a local news reporter wanting to interview me about the high prices. I told them hey, at least I still have a car to put gas in and a home to drive to. When you look at the big picture, $3/gallon isn't so bad, is it?

This situation is absolutely heartbreaking. Please keep these people in your thoughts and prayers. If you have the opportunity to help PLEASE DO!

Thank you for putting things into perspective. Here at work, we were talking about the price of gas going up and up. And like you said, at least I can be grateful today that I too have a car and a house to go to.

My thoughts and prayers certainly go out to those affected by the hurricane.

I'm a bit south of the 6 buck/gallon gouging which went on in Atlanta, but still had to pay $3.25/gallon for gasoline.

Guess what I got to do with mine? Yep, drive 80 miles on Tuesday to call an 11 inning 5-4 varsity game, probably the best game I'll get to see this season, it was fun! (actually gas then was "only" $2.71/gal). I have just returned tonight from another...this one again 5-4 but only took 8 innings. Not quite as good a game as Tuesday, but fun still.

Seeing the devastation in LA, MS, and AL I can totally agree with you Serg, and Sara. I have nothing to complain about at all!

We have ALL been affected by Katrina, but those who have lost family and all they own need our support as well as prayers and sympathy.
