ASA 16U elimination game. I am PU. Runner on 2B. Shot to Rf -the throw home is up the 3rd base line. catcher goes up the line forcing runner to go around her. The catcher makes the catch , turns around and beats the runner to the plate and tags her out. I rule OBS.. ANd the fun began.
I heard everything from the catchers "rights" all the way to my misinterpertation to the sky is green as the reason I got that call wrong.
IMO the catcher impeded the progress of the runner. Please tell me I got this right, if not please tell me what i did wrong.
Thanks for the feedback...

I couldn't tell if you are right or wrong, just that something seems strange.

The catcher goes up the line (assume foul territory) and the runnner goes around her.

This is where I'm having a problem visualizing this play. The catcher heading one way has the runner passing her in the opposite direction. Now, F2 catches the ball, stops, reverses direction and gets up enough speed to catch the runner and tags her out prior to reaching the plate.

That is one helluva athletic catcher or R1 was on crutches. ;)

BTW, I hope that you signaled OBS when the runner changed course and not at the end of the play. Not saying you didn't, just the way the scenario reads.

I agree with Mike. Please provide more info for me to offer an opinion. Thanks.

With only the facts given, this sounds like OBS. I, too, am puzzled by the amazing gifts of F2 (or the amazing snail-like abilities of the runner). Did R1 slip?

Regardless though - slow runner, superhuman catcher - this sounds like OBS.

Yes, by your description, you got it right. The only thing you might have done wrong (in a game management sense, not a correct call sense) is the point Mike made -- if you called the OBS only after the out, you have a credibility / indecision issue with the defensive coach.

Guys, the way I am reading this does not require a superhuman F1 (uhh... I meant F2) nor a superslow runner. If the runner had to run wide enough due to the catcher's movement, and the play was not THAT far up the line, and the catch was received just after the runner was impeded, then F2 would have a closer shot to the plate than the runner.

Part of the point I was trying to draw out. Just how far up the line did the runner adjust? Was the catcher actually in the way (which is why I noted the assumption of being in fair territory)?

If this was a runner rounding 3B and establishing a basepath prior to actually getting to the vicinity of the catcher, maybe it wasn't OBS.
