I had a game recently where the catcher as constantly flipping her mask off straight back and hitting the umpire. I can expect her to flip off her mask on a pop up or getting ready for a play at home. But she was flipping it off every time the batter hit the ball. This was becoming very distracting and painful as I was hit several times. I ask the catcher to please watch what she was doing. Was this correct of me or wrong? The coaches said it was wrong. I said they weren't the ones getting nailed several time during the game for no reason. Please advise.

My thoughts:
It sounds like the catcher "removes" her mask on every hit ball which, to me, is her "habit". Possibly try to avoid the mask as you should be moving on every hit ball. I usually would not say anything to the catcher and would inform the coach about the situation if I deemed it intentional. Players do not like to be "coached" by umpires.
Also, what age group?

Why are you behind the catcher after a batted ball?

You may want to address this to the coaches, but at the same time work in getting out from behind the plate a little quicker. Between the two, you should feel less pain.

I'm thinking that unless the batter is
a lefty, if you're "in the slot" the catcher
(probably right handed) would be flipipng
off the mask to your right.
For safety sake I'd say something anyway--
same for a batter who is flinging the bat
back.
