That was a heckuva game!

Congrats to the girls. And to think, there's 2 freshman and a lot of underclassmen starting on that team!

GO BLUE! (Notice my user name)
Great game. I like the 3 game format instead of only 1 game
Nice job Michigan!

That was awesome. Great job Michigan. Those of us from the mid-west were cheering for you.

Great to see Michigan do so well this year in softball. Sweet for Merchant, from Wayland, MI (25 miles to the south of where I live) to win a championship in her senior year. West Michigan area has some very fine softball players and teams.

Gotta love any team who has fans holding up signs saying....

GO BLUE!!

U_of_I_Blue Wed Jun 08, 2005 10:51pm

Notice my username. Normally us in the orange and blue down in champaign and the maize and blue in ann arbor don't get along. However, I was pulling for them all the way this time. Ought to bring some much deserved respect to our conference in softball. Hopefully, we'll join you guys next year for the tourney and not finish close to the cellar like we did this year. Once again, congrats to Michigan on an absolutely outstanding season. Just goes to show what hard work and dedication gets you.

Just thought I'd throw it out there...

Tennessee has no seniors on this year's squad. Everyone is back from their national 3rd-place team. And Monica Abbott is just a sophomore.

Look out.

emaxos Wed Jun 08, 2005 11:52pm

Big Congratulations to Michigan not only for winning the National Championship but for knocking a west coast team off the mountain top.
The sport needs more top level representation from other regional areas.
Lots of credit to pacific area schools for growing the sport all these years but hopefully the idea that they own the sport out west will now change.

Dangit Dangit Dangit!!! ;:(

I TiVo'd the game, and due to the extra innings, TiVo cut it off in the middle of the 8th! I didn't get to see the end! Good game up to that point!

Dangit dangit dangit!

I wuz rootin' for Eww-kluh, but hopin' Mee-sha-gun would win.

(Yes, I'm weird.)

Another pet peeve of mine with those idiots they allow to speak over a perfectly good softball game.

Why is it that these folks always note, as Holly Rowe did last night, that Michigan represented the "East coast"?

Well, I'm from the East coast and Michigan is no where near here. This has been going on for as many years as the games have been on TV. East of the Mississippi is no big deal, but that does not qualify anything to be labeled as from the East coast.

They don't know the rules, some don't really know any part of the game than what they play and they obviously don't know what a map of the U.S. looks like.

When is ESPN going to wake up? After all, they ARE on the East coast.

Rant off!

BretMan Thu Jun 09, 2005 07:57am

As a scarlet and grey bleeding Buckeye, in the heart of Ohio, I tip my cap to the Wolverines.

Hearing myself say that makes me think that something just froze over...

Congratulations to "that team up north"!

Well, that answers my question on Holly Rowe. :D:D

I knew she probably was no kin, but the thought of asking had entered my mind.

Rant....

Just never happy are you Irish. A post with all good and you have to mention the bad. Do you look at the glass as being half empty and never as possible half full? As many times as they described Michingan from being from the "East" I believe they many times clearified it as a team "East" of the Mississippi River. Nice job Michigan !

No one ever questioned the accomplishment of the Wolverines, and yes, I was cheering for them.

Yes, occasionally they did mention "East of the Mississippi". However, more than a few times the announcers mentioned the East and representing the East Coast including during the final interview with coach and players.

BTW, looking at a 12 ounce glass, whether half full or half empty, it is still only 6 ounces of whatever. Sorry, I cannot help that I'm not a jump up and down rah-rah like some, not everyone can meet your standards of excitement.

While I'm at it, was anyone else disappointed that UM chose to hit away with runners at 1st & 2nd and no outs late in the game?

Neither ... as an engineer, I look at it as having a glass that is twice as big as it needs to be! ;)

Nice to see no umpires have lost their neutrality.

I would have been flipping out if I saw this topic title and was still waiting to watch a tape or TiVo.

hmmmmm. I always take into account how the glass was befor it got "halfway". If it was empty it is now half full. If it started full it is now half empty. I hope this helps some of you somehow. Brian

Yeah Blue!

And, as strange as it seemed to the Illinois & Ohio St. poster to root for Michigan, how about someone from Pac-10 country rooting for a Big-10 team against a Pac-10 team?

The answer is when a local player goes to Michigan!

Congratulations LoriLyn Wilson from Sprague High in south Salem, OR! (Of the thousands of kids I've umpired or otherwise worked with, she's my first "alum." to get to a DI National Championship game.)

Maybe not disappointed, but I did mentioned to the group I was watching with. Seemed
odd at that point that they did not. Guess she knew things would eventually
work out.

SF Thu Jun 09, 2005 11:31pm

Don't know if anyone else has noticed a difference... but a had a couple of games tonight and everybody - coaches, parents, players - was talking about the games. It was 12U, and I think watching the games on TV was the first time many of them had seen the very highest level of softball. They all seemed to think the series was the greatest thing ever (despite the lack of offense).

I gave the girls 12U team that I (assistant) coach for a homework assignment. I told them this after a game last week, in front of all the parents - you all have to go home and watch at least one game of WCWS this coming week, start to finish, with one of your parents. then come back and tell the group what game you watched, who the teams were, and one play you really liked and why.

Earlier this week, almost every parent said something positive about it to me on the side, and the girls loved it. Most of them watched more than one game, and had numerous plays they liked. It got their spirits up and energized them - now they're ready to play like pro's!

GO BLUE!!!

Gotta love the Maze n Blue. Great Job. Also, I want to acknowledge what a great job (seemed risky at the time) Coach Hutch did in the 9th inning. Gotta say that took some softballs to load the bases.

tcannizzo Fri Jun 10, 2005 01:47pm

Actually anything east of the Sierra Nevada range represents the East Coast. lol

tzme415 Fri Jun 10, 2005 02:14pm

Like the Midwest is actually anywhere near the middle of the West (even if you use the Mississipi River, wouldn't middle of the West be Colorado, Wyoming, Utah) - But if you use ESPN as your guide, anything west of Buffalo, NY is in the West. :)

Yeah, but in NY, anything outside the five boroughs is Upstate.

"Yeah, but in NY, anything outside the five boroughs is Upstate."

Nah. Lawn-g Oiland and Yonkers are Downstate, and Albany has honorary membership. They're just considered rural by City people.

Buffalo area.

I know this is a couple days old, but as a parent as well as an official was there anything cuter than Samantha Findlay's BIG smile as the ran the bases? No fist pumping, no "yea me!" Just a big smile from a still-young lady.
I hope I NEVER lose sight of the fact that THAT is why I'm out there facillitating their games be it HS varsity or 8 year old city rec.

NO, but I still peek in once in awhile, Glen. Of course I watched all the games. One - I am also a #1 Michigan Fan, and 2 - to watch the local kid, the finish finest high school athlete (either sex) that I've seen in years. I've watched Jessie Merchant develop since a 10 YO; I coached many of the kids she played with on a great high school team. And I am friends of the extended Ritz family that has been traveling to Oklahoma City the last four years, usually to come home after two games. It has been a fun run.
