If an umpire incorrectly calls a ball in live ball territory a dead ball, is the ball still live or is it dead?

It would be a bell rung, that would be hard to unring. By calling it a dead ball,
the umpire has killed all action on the play and must now live with his/her decision.

here's my story (funny to me)

Just thought I's share a story that happened to me this past weekend.

Saturday afternoon JO tourny, I'm BU working with one of the umpires that helped to train me last year. I'm in the C hole with a righ-handed batter. Either a bunt or swing (can't remember) comes straight down, and to my eye catches the batter in the right foot while she's still in the box. I, in all my umpire glory immediately come up with an authoritative, vocal "DEAD BALL". Now, my partner gives me a look, which I take as confusion because he, in no way could have seen whether or not the ball hit the batter (in my opinion). So I start giving all kinds of signals, even going so far as hitting my right foot with my hand, figuring I'd try to help out with him making his call rather than stating it myself. He starts shaking his head. So, I come in and say the ball hit the batter, while in the box - Foul Ball (I'm so proud of myslef for my keen eye, quick action, and help that I'm providing my veteran partner. At this point, he looks me square in the eye, says, "I know that we teach you to help your partner on this call, but, I had a clean look at it, and the ball did not hit the foot. It was about an inch away".

Long story short - DEAD BALL stands, batter back in the box and play on.

How about your other partner?

Hey, streamdoc, should we start a string about your other partner from last Saturday? I wonder how many others do the "Shuffle?"

Rolling Stones....

Sung to the tune of "Harlem Shuffle", "Hey, hey, hey, do the &$#@ shuffle"

Kept going through my head.
