Just when you think you have it straight. I had a discussion with a local, and well-respected, umpire the other night who made me question whether I understand batting-out-of-order for a few of the various sanctioning bodied under my daughter plays.

SITUATION: R1 at 1st. One out. Improper B3 comes to bat when it is B2's turn. B3 reaches on a fielder's choice as R1 is forced out at 2nd. At the conclusion of the play, the defense claims that B3 batted out of order.

QUESTION: Who is out? Where do you place the runners? And who bats next?

Please answer this for ...

FED, ASA, and NSA

Thanks!

I believe the ruling in all organizations would be the same:

R1 is put out on the play and this out stands. B2 is called out for not taking their proper turn at bat. This makes three outs, so B3 would be the first to bat in the next inning.

I don't call NSA, but SC's right for ASA and Fed.

Where the rules bodies differ is when the improper batter is put out on the play.
