So I don't add to the already hijacked thread below.
if I followed everyone they agreed that if the ball hits the catcher's mitt 1st and then bounces wherever and is then caught by the catcher it is a foul tip. I have two questions,
1) If there are less then 2 strikes (with 2 strikes it is a matter of symantics, foul tip caught 3rd strike or caught ball in foul territory don't matter batter is out) if the ball nips the batt then strikes the catchers mitt then face mask and richochets up 15 feet (man that girl can throw heat) and the catcher makes a diving catch we are going to only signal foul tip strike 1 or 2?? Hello coach, have any of you made this call?

2) In the hijacked thread there was talk of the ball hitting the mitt or equipment and then hitting the umpire and then being caught. This would not be an out as hitting the umpire is considered as hitting the ground so it would be a foul ball no matter what wouldn't it?

Foul tip.

Discussion with the coach goes like this - Coach, obviously the tipped ball hit something to cause it to rebound up into the air. I saw it hit the glove - that is a foul tip, stirke. Are you arguing that it hit the catcher's mask first? That would be merely a foul ball. It hit something. Which way do you want to argue?

Foul ball, right.

To round out the discussion

If a foul tip first hits anything other than the catchers glove or hand, then it has to be foul ball.

If a foul tip, after first hitting the catcher's glove or hand, next hits anything other than the catcher or his/her equipment (i.e. batter, umpire, fence, ground, another defensive player), then we have a foul ball.

If a foul tip first hits the catchers glove or hand and then hits their mask, chest protector or any other piece of equipment, it is a foul tip if legally caught.

Any corrections?

Any corrections???..
Speaking Fed I would say no...
However, would it be more correct to restructure each sentence to ask, "If a ball coming off of the bat" in lieu of "If a foul tip"?? I'm not trying to nit pick here, just tryin to lern et the wright weigh :p

Probably

I was just being lazy in my typing. I thought about that but decided against rewording it.

Dakota,
My thought was an arguement with the Defensive coach. If the ball hits the glove first and is then bounces off the mask and catcher makes a diving catch we have a strike, but am I nuts that if it comes off the bat, hits the helmet first flys through the air and then is caught on a dive that would be an out?

If I am right (1st time for everything) then I would think the defensive coach would want a discussion as to why we have a strike not an out!

I was describing the discussion with the defensive coach, who presumably wants the out. But his choices are foul tip, strike, or foul ball. Read ASA Rule 1 - FOUL BALL - G. Don't be confused by the phrase "another fielder" - that includes the catcher.
