It has been awhile since I umpired on a regular basis, age and work prevent me from getting out there much often. In my early years I did HS Softball and Baseball along with ASA fast pitch. At my youngest daughter's 14U ASA fastpitch game there was quite a stitch that did not effect the outcome but caused a lot of dust to get stirred up in my brain. There were two out and a runner on third and two strikes on the batter. Swinging third strike with a passed ball. Batter-Runner gets out of the way of the play at home plate. Runner on third scores. Then batter takes off for first and the throw beats her. Umpires tell scorer not to count run because batter-runner out on a force out. At first I thought that was correct BUT, then I remembered a more experienced umpire in a similar play in high school game say that that the run would count if the runner scored before the batter-runner was put out.

What do you sharp minded guys think.

Force Play - no run

The run shall not score if the 3rd out is a result of a force play.

Either that "more experienced umpire" had it bass-ackwards, or your memory of what he said is a little off.

ASA Rule 5-5-B states:

"No run shall be scored if the third out of the inning is the result of:
1) A batter-runner being called out prior to reaching first base..."

That's the section of the rule that applies here. No run.

Picking nits, the failure of the batter-runner to reach first safely is not a force out. The effect is the same, in that no run can score if the BR makes the 3rd out before reaching first safely, but a force out is defined as one where another runner must advance because the batter became a batter-runner.

Just in the past week I have posted two different situations on
the subject of D3K. It seems you and your advisor were having the
problems also. Welcome back to the board. The correct answer has
been supplied to your inquiry. [I know they don't need me to tell you
[them] that. I just wanted you to review some other D3K situations.
One handled correctly, one incorrectly.

True for some codes, but it is an actual defined force out in ASA. But either way, no run scores.
