Ok here is the situation as best I can recall

1 out

R1 on B3
R2 on B2

Batter hits a grounder to F6 who holds runners and gets BR @ B1 (was close play). I was watching the play at B1 and didnt see the call by the BU because he is in 3.. and then it starts because all the runners are starting to run.

We have a close play at home (R1 safe), which takes my focus, then a close play at B3 (he is still in 3) he takes the call and its out (2 outs)..

Then!!!

BR! at 1b, taking a big lead!, gets caught in a run down between 1b and 2b. Eventually the D gets the BR out (BU takes call) and the team D clears the field and Of takes the field (3 outs).. (I wasnt sure the BR was out as I did not see the call.. but apparently she was)

Very active and exciting plays, but its now starting to dawn on all involved that something wasnt right.. what was the BR doing still on base, taking leads, etc... and we all meet scratching our heads. Coaches were fine because we are all confused as to what happened exactly..

Anyway, I let them know right away, what ever happened, the field has been taken and thats it, its over and it stands... but we'll talk about it for the sake of talking about what went wrong.

It was a head scratcher that we met with coaches about for the next two innings... trying to figure out what happened and what should have been done. It was very friendly considering the situation.

I think there were errors on the part of me as PU and the BU and the players.. but I'd like input from those on the board.

Thoughts?

If I am reading you right, the BR was thrown out at 1st base for the second out of the inning, and R2 was thrown out at 3rd for the final out.

All that happened was some fun practice during the half inning.

ugh...

i'm under the impression that the BR was 2 outs during the inning..

I dunno, the play still has me confused. I requested an instant replay..

You put it like that and maybe I accidently got it right.

doh.

For the sake of argument.. what if there were no outs?

wadeintothem,

This is all you need to know that there were 3 outs.

yeah, i see that... so I'm not even sure what the prob was..

So I want to see opinion on the same situation with no outs... the BR getting 2 of the 3 outs on the play...

what then?

Lot's of woulda's and coulda's.

BR then becomes a retired runner continuing to run and drawing a throw. Definitionally, interference. However, if there were no other runners on base, there is no play, so no real call to make except DEAD BALL.

If, instead, a third out is called, and the teams change sides, if the error is caught before the next half inning starts, bring the original defense back out, bring up the proper batter and continue.

If the next half inning has started (pitch thrown), then play stands with a 2 out inning.

I guess.

It cannot happen. You get the scorekeeper and walk through the play. When you find out there was only two outs, you reset the teams where they were before you lost control of the game.
