If a batter runs through the batters box holding the bat still and hits the ball , is this a bunt or slap .
only important on the third strike if it goes foul . Note : ISF rules . Reading the definitions od a slap part2 it describes it perfectly but I have been told part 1 and 2 should be read together . I judge it as a slap and will continue to do so until convinced otheerwise |
Had a situation tonight where the batter with two strikes
runs towards the ball, bat extended and on contact ball goes foul. I call foul, "strikeeeee three". No doubt in my mind this was a drag attempt and not slap. We were in a 2-2 ball game, bottom of 7th. Coachs and fans did not like the call, but after seeing the replay on TV moments ago, I have no doubt I made the right call. BTW, game eneded in bottom of 8th - walk off HR by the pitcher. This kid is 8-0 averaging 14 K's per game....Had 16 tonight. glen |
Slap/bunt
I take it by drag you meant bunt and the batter is out for bunting on the third strike .
No definition od drag in my rule book . Please explain . |
"Is this a bunt or slap?"
Three clues: 1. Normally the hands will be together for a slap, apart for a bunt. (Normally!) Often the hands are apart for a fake bunt, then bottom hand slides up to meet top hand for a slap. 2. Wrists break on a slap, push on a bunt. 3. Barrell of bat is traveling faster than handle on a slap; even with handle on a bunt. WMB |
I echo WMB.
If tha bat itself is not moving toward the ball, but only moved by the running player it is bunt. The clues given by WMB are a good guidline for your judgement. Raoul |
to WMB---
nice set of guidelines !!! I'll bring this up at our next association meeting ! |
I disagree, a mere breaking of the wrist is not a slap...
This is not a hard call to make...You are either swinging or your not.... Just breaking of the wrist does not cut it...A player can roll the wrist over when bunting to help bunt the ball downwards...And rolling the wrist is also breaking your wrist. This is not a swing... This is a true advantage for a slapper..Just keep bunting until you get one down... Baseball would never have a problem making this call but softball can never get it right...Same sport, bat and ball and pitcher and hitter but for some reason a different call... |

I am willing to wager that if a batter "roll" or "break" their wrist, it will appear to be a swing, not a bunt. |
