Does anyone know of a place or places which need Softball Umpires for many games November - March?
When I indicate "need" I mean that there are games that can keep the umpire busy all or most of the week. When I say softball, I mean FP/mod/SP/FED (or any combination). When I say "place or places" I mean location(s) that are looking for experienced umpires so that there will be enough games or tournaments to keep one very busy (continental U.S.). Just thinking about planning my retirement. 8^) TJ [Edited by MA Softball Ump on Feb 24th, 2005 at 02:28 PM] |

Last time I visited Maui, there were softball games going on well into December.

In the area of Texas I reside, there is a tournament nearly
every weekend. About the only shut down period is two weeks before Christmas...ASA, AFA, USSSA, LL, and NSA. Houston always has something, as well as the Beaumont area. |
Stole this (slightly edited) from the baseball board. You might find it helpful. :D
Membership requirements to the Geezer club: Hiking ones Fechheimers above the navel. Starting your rules or mechanics discussions with "when I was your age" can't hurt. Not being able to tell if you shined your shoes once you've put them on is a good start. Bonus for extra hair in extraordinary places. You walk like Walter Brennan. You know who Walter Brennan was. Your white cane is made by Honigs. All aboard for Coot Town, Curmudgeon, and Geezerville! As an added bonus you'll recieve +POS suspenders with your approved membership. |
I have friends in Florida and Arizona who are fellow blues and tell me how nice it is to umpire ball year round. Matter of fact, my buddy in Arizona teases me about the fact he's already doing games while I'm waiting for the season to start. I just shoot back saying at least I'm doing some basketball still!!!

Here a baseball/softball umpire can
work a lot !! I just umpire high school fastpitch, whose season is from Feb thru May. There are all kinds of adult slo-pitch leagues and youth leagues for baseball and softball if that's to your liking. Spring finds northern college teams down for softball and baeball games in the good weather. They are adding new schools and with so many new homes, etc. the sport's scene is exploding !! |
I worked year round when I was in Tampa, FL in the 90s. I could pretty much work every night of the week, Mid-January through Mid-November, if I wanted to. Nov-Jan seemed to be the Thanksgiving/Christmas breaks. During the week, it was ASA ball with the Hillsborough County Umpire's Association. See http://www.hcuasoftball.org/.
On weekends, I was either busy with Little League Ball with "Triangle Umpire's Association", or about ten weekends out of the year, I would travel an hour south to Sarasota to do NSA tournament ball. Big tournaments with 7 to 10 fields going from Friday through Sunday afternoon. I would get about a dozen games and they would supply the hotel room. My contact for both Little League and NSA was Mel Pace, tpace@chuma 1.cas.usf.edu. Those are my plans for when I turn 59½ and can start hitting that 401-k money. |
