With the new NFHS definition for Foul Ball vs. Foul Tip, I'ld like for some thoughts about how the Plate Umpire should signal/call the situation where a runner is stealing 2nd with less than two outs and the batter (a) Foul Tips strike three, or (b) Foul Balls strike three to the Catcher for an out. In (B), I know the runner needs to re-tag before advancing to 2nd, but what mechanic should be used to convey that information to both the Base Umpire and the runner heading to 2nd? I'm not too concerned about the Foul Tip, since it would be treated the same as a pure strike out.

Many thanks.

I am not sure what you are looking for here. There is no foul ball for strike three in FP. Are you referring to SP, or are you referring to a fly ball that is caught by the catcher in foul territory? If you are talking about SP, then I cannot help you as I don't work SP. However, in FP the mechanic of a caught fly ball would simply be a hammer with an out call made by the PU.

Hope this helps.

A - is easy: Bringing left hand about chest high or higher,
brushing either the palm or back of the hand with the right
hand. This indicates to all the ball was tipped, caught,
and live. You partner should recognize the signal.

B - Not hard either. Give the out signal, verbalizing
with "catch". Everyone will know you have a caught fly ball, and runners run at their own risk.

Hmmm....nothing different than it has been.

FYI - the FED definition is not "new", they simply deleted language that had nothing to do with the definition

3rd Strike Foul Ball Mechanic

Thanks for all your replies.
Skahtboi, I was referring to Fast Pitch.
Our state interpreter did a lousy job explaining the change in the Foul Tip definition (eliminating "higher than the batters head").
The suggestions defintely help.
