Ok here's an easy one for the expiernced but has the young
(In Umpire Years) confused. SIT: B1 hits slow grounder to F3 who picks the ball up with his bare hand and swipe tags 1st base with his glove before B1 touches 1st.......Safe or Out?? My confusion comes from the rule book which state in defenations that a fielder who has control and touches the base with part of his body. Under the rule section when talking about a runner being out on a force it states that a fielder in control of the ball making any contact with the base. I guess my question is the glove a extension of the fielder's hand?? Thanks Don |
Out.(as long as the glove is worn in a normal manner) We don't make them take off their shoe and touch the base with their foot do we! (g)
I heard it stated one time that if the player fell down, and her 3 foot long ponytail touched the base while she had the ball we took the out. That would make the glove tag look tame. Roger Greene, Member UT |
Don,
The longer that you umpire, the more really strange things you're going to see. Remember, just because it looks strange does not make it illegal or invalid. Your play was a good example of that - Roger's hairy play was even better. Wait until you see some of the pitching motions. |
If a player reaches 2B safely, but lost his prosthetic limb between the bases, can the defense tag the detached body part for an out? d:-)
This is a rhetorical question, no reply necessary! |
I guess we'd have to go with locating where the majority of the person was at the time of the tag.(G)
