on my nfhs study guide I can't find the rule to cover this one.The 3rd strike by B3 is missed by the catcher and the ball lodges between her body and her chest protector.Whatis your ruling with rule reference? A.dead ball is called and batter out.B.dead ball is called and batter awarded 1st.C.live ball and all play legal. Thanks for any help.

Blocked ball

Seems to me you got a blocked ball.........

Look at 5-1-1-g......one base award at TOP.

My answer is B.

I'm making a correction here so there's noconfusion from anything I've posted. Roger, in another response showed that Fed does cover this with 5-1-1-g5. Interesting note to this is that NFHS rules kill this play if the ball is lodged in the catcher's or umpire's equipment while ASA kills it if it lodges in any defensive player's uniform or equipment.
Here's the wrong answer that I gave:
I go with C - live ball, play on. ASA covers this situation with 8-4-I, but NFHS does not cover it. If you do find a ruling that covers this in Fed ball, please let me know - I'll need to change my rule differences docu.

A ball lodged in catcher's equipment is dead, 5-1-1g5.
Award all runners one base from TOP (the batter is now a runner because of an uncaught 3rd strike.) 8-3-3d
BR ends up on 1st base. (unless 1st was occupied)

Quick hint: for most situations you come across the answer is in the "Dead Ball Tables" found in rule 5. If you learn that table and the Baserunning Awards Table in rule 8 most coaches will think you are an expert.

Roger,
Thanks. Looks like I've got a change to make.

Dead Ball Table

Roger.......

That's how I found it so quick.

Last year I got the dead ball table and blew it up onto 8.5 X 11 paper.....makes it a lot easier for these eyes.

I need to remember to do this for the 2001 book.

It is a really cool quick reference.
