Doing HS Fall ball tonight. I am BU. No one on, batter hits a
screamer to RF, where F9 is playing up. (Actually about 10 feet
behind me and to my right.) Ball is hit hard and I knew I had to
cut to the outside, or run in front of the play. Went to the foul
side, watch F9 field the ball, turn towards 1B and "WHAM" get hit
hard just under the right breast area. That is the hardest I
have ever been hit playing or umpiring. If that ball hits me in the
right side, I honestly think it would have killed me, because it
would have hit right at the heart area. (Yes, the throw was of very
poor quality - way off line.)

What is the worst hit any of you have taken? Just curious.

I was behind the plate, where I think I have a good stance and mechanics. The pitch was high and fast and the catcher did not get a glove on it. I apparently had set up with my head ever so slightly down.

The ball barely missed my mask and hit the metal button on the top of my cap, glancing off to the backstop. It drew an ever so slight amount of blood, but I think that was about the most painful thing I have ever felt.

No kidding? Your heart in on the wrong side of your body? Mine is on the left side of my chest.

Just out of curiousity, but why were you not watching the ball? :D

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Mike,

I just turned too quickly to see the catch. I knew it would
be a banger. (and I did type the wrong thing)

Mick,

Thanks.

UPDATE:

Went to doctor, two broken ribs and one cracked. Guess I sit this week and next out.

"Just out of curiousity, but why were you not watching the ball? :D"

Sometimes it doesn't matter if you see it coming; it’s hard to get out of the way. I know because I took a bad hit this summer.

Men's FP, multiple runners on, fly ball to CF, I’m in "C" coming inside to pick up catch and throw. In girl's ball I like to get somewhere between the SS and pitcher's plate. I start so deep with the men, and they throw so fast that I seldom get past the base path.

On this night the throw went home, F2 cut it in front of the plate and fired to third. I took a step towards 3B to see the throw skip past F5. F6, backing up 3B fielded the ball on one hop and fired to 2B. At this point I was in direct line and no more than 25' from a hard thrown ball by an adult male. I got hit in the forearm and then the rib cage. Had huge swelling and bruises in both areas. My hand went numb and I was sure my arm was broken. Fortunately not, but it was a month before the arm felt good again. Had that ball hit almost anywhere else in a 12" - 16" radius and I probably would have left the field on a medical cart.

Glen,
Have you ever considered that the throw may have been a very good throw and right on line?
