Seeing that I'm UIC for a tournament this weekend, I was wondering if any of you can add to my list of things to talk about with partners...about 1/2 my crew has worked together, and the other 1/2 are relatively new.

Here's what I have off the top of my head.

1. Check swing appeals
2. Appeals of pulled foot (how to handle it)
3. Second throw in the infield...who calls it.
4. Pick off attempt at first when BU is in "C" Position.
5. One runner on, fly ball, tag up responsibilties.
6. Multiple runners with fly ball.
7. No runners, snap throw to first base from right field...who is taking possible call at second on overthrow.
8. Base umpire going out on fly balls (two-umpire system).
9. ???

IN another post, someone mentioned a 1 hour car ride and a 1 hour pregame...what all is covered in this?

JEL Wed Jun 09, 2004 03:37am

FUBLUE,

I posted about the car ride and the 1 hr further conference. We actually used a dry erase board at the HS to diagram the 3 man system we were using! Two weeks earlier with a different crew, we drove 3.5 hrs and discussed the 3 man most of the way. We are all from same association, and work 2 man with each other often. 3 man adds a twist which can lead to problems if all aren't "on the same page"

Your 8 points are a great start, #4 being discussed in a current thread.

More items to discuss;

9. Run down plays between bases
10. Run down plays between 3rd and home
11. Basic field positioning
Watched out of town game tonight, BU w/runners on stood 5' inside line at 1B and never moved! no B slot, no C slot etc.
12. Communicate before each play as needed. "Bob, I have runner to 3B", or "Joe, you take tag at 2" really helps out.
13. If a rule interp needs to be given, get together and talk about it first.

Seems like you always forget something, but if you have good umpires who try to do a professional job, it always works out OK.

14. Actually, this should have been higher on the list,
but other 13 already listed.

14. Who is buying the beer? UBB Code: http://www.spao.de/pict/smilies/beerchug.gif

Looks like everything else pretty well covered.

Good replies. I knew I was forgettting something.

As for the beer, the umpire who goes extra innings buys the beer! For the whole crew!

Higher on the list? Hell, that IS the list!

LOL if I bought beer for any partner I've worked with I'd go to jail for whatever it is when you buy alcohol for minors!

Don't forget fair/foul. 2 man BU in A takes bag and beyond but with no lines we usually decide to let PU take all fair/foul.

Seeing as how we will be there.....Let's not forget the 2nd most important topic (Beer is first!!!), but where is the best food joint in the area!!!! Since we will be in Southern Indiana...We want some good BBQ or Ribs.

BTW....Nice Letter. Will Email you my Cell later.

See you Friday.

Ahem.... This is in Indiana. I seriously doubt, Sergio, that you would recognize it as "Mexican." ;)

Hijacking alert....but anyway...:)

It would probably be called "Mexican style food" because most "Authentic Mexican Food" places here have about 10 tables in the restaurant. And the food tastes horrible! (But I don't really like Mexican food).

Hijacking alert???? Unless you're "flying" a lowrider Chevy, we wouldn't know how to steer an airplane. But then again, if we can keep the airplane on the ground, and "drive" it no faster than 10 mph, and put some hydraulics, then again. With the right size hydraulics, do airplanes "jump"????

And that folks, is what umpires talk to partners about! :)

Bandit Thu Jun 10, 2004 01:13pm

Don't forget the balls

I had a lowrider Dodge Shadow once...but that was because me (at 300) and my baby brother (at 355) sat in it at the same time! :)

Have you seen SOUL PLANE? ;)
