Ok, a guy comes up to me to ask me about a play that happened on another diamond last night. So here it is R1 on 2nd stealing 3rd, 3rd base coach in coaches box watching his runner not paying any attention to the catchers throw. Throw is wide and hits coach in the back of the head, and deflects into dead ball territory.

So what do we have? I can't see coaches interference as the coach was where he should have been, and since he didn't even see it coming it probably wasn't intentional. So do we get a two base award since the throw went into DBT?

Must be intentional by coach, which it probably wasnt.. i got 2 base award for live ball going into DBT.

Man, those coaches are really getting sneaky, aren't they?

Dead ball, score the run, get the catcher a pair of glasses or make her an umpire.

Agree with above!

speaking of back of the head plays...

A few weeks ago I was watching a game umped by a HS Sball player and on a passed ball steal the catcher threw the ball and creamed that ump right in the back of the head. After some amount of crying (there may be no crying in baseball, but softball is another matter!) and switching spots with the BU the game was continued.

That ole sneaky block the ball with the back of your head play in action!

Hey, I used that play as a runner all the time in high school, especially at third. Take a big enough lead to draw a throw, then on the way back, go in feet first as I line my head up with the 3B' glove, ball deflects into left field, get up and score. Did that about 7 times in two years.

Dave,

Throw is wide and hits coach in the back of the head, and deflects into dead ball territory.

So what do we have?

Since the question has been properly answered, I will
play the smart ssa in this one.

A coach with a headache and a catcher with a bad arm.

If that was Tommy Lasorda or Old Don Zimmer in the box, more like coach with a lump on the back of his head and ready to go on with the game, along with a pat on the catcher's head and a "don't worry, we'll all be fine".
