I would appreciate any help.

Babe Ruth 12 & under

I caught a lot of heat from the parents of my daughter's team this weekend. I am the official scorer and I ruled the run (for the opposing team) should count in the floowing situation:

There are two outs with a runner on third base only. The batter swings and misses on strike three. The ball gets by the catcher and goes to the backstop. The batter begins to walk back to the dugout. The runner on third crosses the plate. The catcher retrieves the ball and throws to first for the third out. Does the run count?

According to the rules, the batter may head toward the dugout and then run to first. The batter only wlked 10 feet or so toward the dugout, so this is a non-issue in this situation.

Also, could someone refer me to the rule where this situation.

Thanks for your help.

I don't have my rule book handy for the reference but no run can score on a play where the 3rd out is made on the BR before reaching 1st base.

I hope it wasn't the deciding run, since you were wrong.

No run scores when the 3rd out is on the BR before reaching 1st or when the 3rd out is a force out.

Since this BR was put out on the Third Strike Rule before reaching 1st, no runs scored.

Babe Ruth doesn't put their rules on line (that I could find), but this is the same for all softball (and baseball) that I know of.

The ASA rule is 5-5B-1.
The NFHS rule is 9-1-1 EXCEPTION (1) and (2).
The AFA rule is 4.1c-1.

No harm, no foul

Thank you both for your help. Thankfully, it was not the deciding run.

I would add that it's not the scorekeeper's decision whether a run scores or not. It's the umpire's. He/She should have told you whether a run scores or not on a play where the 3rd out is made.
