You are in the bottom of the 9th inning, 1-0 visitors,
tying run on third, 2 outs batter lays down a bunt that
F1 slips trying to field, grabs the ball on her knees and
fires a bullet to F3 on a very close play. I wait until
all action is over, give a great sell out, and the first
base coach says, "Good call, glen". Did not know she even
knew my name. We shook hands and she took her team home.
Damn, I love this game.

...there is no need to get to the bottom of the 8th let alone the 9th inning.

You probably weren't being completely serious, Mike, but ...

NFHS says game-ending rules are a local option. Here, the state HS league does not endorse the tie-breaker rule. We play extra innings just like the MLB boys do. Keep playing the game until...

a) Somebody wins, or
b) Game called on account of darkness (if no lights).

In the case of b), tie scores are allowed in regular season play.

One more reason why I consider NFHS weak rules makers and believe they should get out of the business.

Glen, worked with a couple of guys out of Lufkin this weekend, one of the was a gentleman name of Elmore that said he had the pleasure of working with ya before. Any chance you are going to be in Conroe in a few weeks??

Warm fuzzy feeling good, but....

Even though it makes me feel good, too, I always take my compliments with a grain of salt. One of my mentors told me that if you believe them when they say you did a good job, you have to believe them when they say you suck!

Case in point: 1st game I had Saturday I was "unfair and one-sided." Complaining team lost 16-6, under the ten-run rule. 2nd game, I was complimented on my fairness and ability to make good calls on the bangers, again by the losing team (14-4, also ten-run ruled).

So, which am I? Sometimes I get a little schizo during my umpiring days...

I think it depends on coach...if they're all over you on bang-bangers, telling you you're blind, stupid, etc., then the compliment means nothing. But if they don't disagree and tell you you did well, then it probably is true.

When I was coaching, I had an umpire who was very good, even though we lost every game he worked (heck, we lost all but a handful of games) but I always asked him back. He called a good zone, had good mechanics, and good judgment. I never worried when I had him. As for the rest of the idiots we got, well...

Don,

Yea, I met Elroy about 17 years ago in a playoff situtation.
I am going to join his association this year. I was just a part-
timer for them this year. He and I have worked AFA 18U Nationals
together for the past 8 years.

When you going to Conroe? I will try and make the trip if I am not
working around here. What type tournament you doing? Would like
to put a face with the name....

oppool Mon May 17, 2004 04:56pm

Glen

I would enjoy meeting with you. I have heard great things from everybody that has had a chance to meet or work with you in the past. NSA fast pitch state championships are in Conroe the weekends of June 11-13 will be the A divisions and June 18-20 will be the B divisions. I will probably come down the latter week of the 2. If you are interested in calling let them know, I know they will be looking for umps

Don,

I just happen not to be working anything June 11/12. I
have the NSA uniforms. Would really enjoy it. I am
working an NFSA State tournament the following week 18/19.
It is in Houston. Just let me know when you go and I will
attempt to get there and at least met you.

Thanks,

I need this person to do a Coach's clinic in my area.

They are trying Mike, they are adopting more of the ASA
rules. Hopefully one day they will just get ASA's OK to
re-publish their book, with the NFHS logo on front. :D

Is that a slow pitch thing.....I never call time when giving
the count. I only give it every 3rd pitch, unless something
has caused a delay. I always step out from behind the plate and
indicate and vocalize 1-2, 2-1, 3-2. Nautrally by my action of
removing myself from behind the plate, time is implied, but this
takes only moments.

Am I missing something, or are you just picking on Mike? :D

To continue with Glen's original thought in this thread:

You know what really feels good? Last night, working with a partner that I have called with many times, we have a run down between first and second. We both do a textbook bracket of the runner, who makes it back safe to first on a mishandled throw. Almost immediately, F3(or whoever picked up the ball) guns to third to try and pick off another runner. The balls gets past the defender and the runner breaks for home, and, you guessed it, gets caught in a rundown. Both partner and myself bust our bust to get over there, and again bracket the rundown. Runner is tagged on the third or fourth retreat back to third. After the inning, offensive coach comes over and compliments our seamless coverage of both plays, and tells us that watching us made him tired! Gotta love it!

I know Roger is picking on me, because I know he is too smart to honestly believe what he said is actually what occurs.

Makes your day

Had 2 episodes recently that fit the "Really Feels Good" theme.

After a particularly close game with some close calls, rules questions, and heated discussions, I had the losing coach call me at home just to let me know I had done a good job.

After another close, high scoring game in which a coach questioned a couple of key decisions, in the parking lot, he thanked me, and said "You were absolutely great, and you were absolutely right." The last clause is the important one.

Bue it is refreshing to know there are some "good" coaches out there to go with those we read about that could be a great deal better.
